Parenting after a Loss

PW: Incessant Crying Sunday = Dreading Monday

I love my son. I longed for, yearned and prayed for him. Yet today I am ready to sell him on eBay without setting a reserve price. He is baseline a colicky refluxy kid, but for some reason today he just won't.stop.crying. Shreiking, even, on occasion. Arching backwards out of my arms. Refusing to be calmed by any intervention you can name, medicinal and otherwise (we have tried them all - even dancing to bad 70s music, which is usually daddy's secret weapon). We're 3 days into Zantac and I don't think it's doing jack sh*t for him. I've effectively cut out dairy just in case. And starting tomorrow I'm back on my own when DH goes back to work. I may just lose the little mind I have left. DH suggested I break out the Bose noise cancelling headphones...and he was only half kidding.

I'm calling the Dr tomorrow, but doubt she'll be much help. At some point this will get better. I keep chanting that in my head like a mantra.

Ok, had to get that out. Today's PW post over/.

ETA-he even cries intermittently when I'm nursing him. It just makes me feel totally defeated to look into the crying face of the baby you love and are trying to feed. I think that put me over the edge.

Re: PW: Incessant Crying Sunday = Dreading Monday

  • I am so sorry about what you are going through.  Did you check his temperature?  If he continues to cry non-stop, you may want to call your pedi. Sometimes when my DS gets on a crying fit, only walking him (with a paci) calms him down. It is exhausting, but sometimes it works.  Hugs

  • Been there.  Especially the crying during feedings. Makes me heart hurt thinking about it.  Took about a week for the zantac to have a positive effect for Loretta.  Hang in there....if its indeed reflex it may need a little more time kick in.

  • Hang in there. I would call the pedi. If that Zantac isn't working, she may want to try Prevacid instead.

  • I'm sorry.

Zantac worked for one of my kiddos - but the other only responded to Axid and it took about a week.

I am NOT kidding when I say that noise cancelling headphones might not be a bad way to go.  Look, you're there, you can comfort him, you can hold him - but - but - but you'll go crazy if you don't give yourself a break.  I spent about a month of my son's life with earplugs in.  I didn't ignore him - I cared for him - but the earplugs allowed me to not ball up and cry every 2 minutes.

Good luck tomorrow.  Ask your doc if you can give a little mylanta at feedings (the dose is 1/4 tsp, I think? It's VERY small) .  If that's a no - consider adding gas drops AND gripe water to the mix.  And remember that this too shall pass.  The crying is probably really hurting your case too - because he'll gulp air AND crying makes reflux worse.  The gripe water and gas drops can help and the zantac will give overall reflux management.

  • I'm so sorry.  I hope that it gets better soon.  Hugs to you.

  • Oh my dear I literally LOL'd at your eBay idea. I feel the same way! I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time. I think our LOs would be great friends they seem to have a lot in common! I'm nervous too because DH left for a business trip today. Until now he's been home with me almost everyday and I'm sitting here nursing her (while she cries and fusses as she eats and occasionally yanks hard on my nipples, ow) wondering how on earth I am going to put her down long enough to brush my teeth or take out my contacts. I guess I should charge up the Bose headphones, not a bad idea! Hope things get better for you soon!

  • Thanks so much for the support and advice--both are incredibly helpful as usual. Without this board I'd lose my mind, no doubt. LO finally went to sleep at about 10 last night and I got 2.5 solid hours of quiet and some sleep, which really helped. Now we're up again but I'm definitely "fresher" than I was when I posted. Thanks again.

Thanks for this perspective. The pedi said we'd see positive changes in 72 hours, which seemed too good to be true and indeed it was. :). Knowing your experience really helps frame the "real" potential timeline for me.

Thank you so for these great tips. The earplugs are actually a fantastic idea, and slightly less cumbersome than the headphones. You are right on about the crying and air gulping, too. It just all becomes a vicious circle. Monday will see the introduction of a Mylicon/gripe water/Zantac cocktail to our regimen, and I'm going to ask about the mylanta.

Hi Ginger - it's a shame we don't live anywhere near each other. We could hang out together with our noisy LOs while rocking our headphones and each use our one free hand to collaborate and get things done with 2 hands (isn't that a pretty picture?). Sending you ((hugs)) and calm baby dust for use while DH is out of town. Hope Winter has a better say tomorrow.

    How did it go today?
Thanks so much for checking. The day went okay. I gas earplugs at the ready but only needed them a couple times-so all in all not as bad as I feared. Today was actually pretty darn good. We had follow up at the Drs for reflux issues so we have a plan. All the advice in the responses to my thread was so helpful. Thanks so much. I really hopexwe are turning a corner.

That's what does me in with the reflux as well.  Its hard enough knowing that they're hurting.  Knowing that he was hurting because of something I did (feed him) was pretty much unbearable.

I really hope things get easier on you soon.
