Is it too weird?

DH and I really love the name Persephone for a girl. Is it to weird a name? Will people constantly be saying and spelling it wrong?

  • I love the sound of it but I don't like the myth it came from.

  • I love it! While many people feel that possible (or likely) spelling and pronounciations are a naming deal breaker - I (obviously) am not worried about it. I believe that if someone is in Baby's life, then they will take the time and effort to learn her name.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • In short, yes. I think it's a little too "out there" for every child to pull off. I can imagine it on a very pretty young woman who is dripping with confidence, but I don't think the name suits every personality, so I wouldn't use it.

    AGREED.

Except that not everyone in your baby's life will be in it by their choice (or your baby's choice). Think...classmates, teachers, co-workers etc. Just something to think about...

  • I love Persephone and my DH actually liked it until he tried to figure out how to spell or read it. It has an interesting story behind it and is a song by my favorite band (Third Eye Blind) and have always thought it was really beautiful. Sadly, it IS a little too difficult I think. If you do love it enough to use then you better have a nickname you love for her because it will likely be used a lot.
  • It is too out there for my taste.  I don't really like long names to begin with and this is extremely uncommon.  I don't want to offend, but it comes off as snobby and pretentious.

  • It's different but I think it's a lovely name. At least it's a real name and not one of those God awful made up names that have been trendy lately (Neaeah, etc.)
  • I love Persephone. People will definitely say and spell it wrong, but I don't think that should be a deal breaker. It's a beautiful, legitimate name with lots of history and I love the thought of it for a baby born in Spring. Use it so I can be jealous! :)

  • don't like it. Too weird. Too much possibility for embarassment for the kid.

  • I know what it is when I see it but, spelling it without reference might be hard. I think that if you use it, it needs a kid friendly nickname. What kind of NNs are you thinking of?

  • A friend on FB just named her daughter this. She was born 11/11.

  • I love mythology so I really like it. I actually LOVE Demeter for a girl, but that has been unceremoniously shot down by everyone I know.
