Token? Iris? OK.. anyone?

Since I trust you opinions, I am in a bit of a bind and have a question:

I need to leave DS for about 4 hours very shortly. Its a last minute thing and I absolutely can't take him with me. I don't pump regularly so I don't have a stash.

I tried pumping earlier and got a measly 2 ounces. Would it be awful to take the two ounces, throw an ounce of water with it and add some ground oats to thicken it? I will feed him before I leave so this is more just a snack to hold him over until I get back.

I'm screwed. Somehow it never crossed my mind that an actual emergency would pop up and I'd have to leave him..

  • Not sure if you've already left yet, but...

I wouldn't mix anything in. I don't think it would be the end of the world if you did, though. I would just have whoever's watching him give him the 2oz as a "top up" to hold him until you get back.

Four hours is long, but it isn't crazy long at this age (yes, I know your LO is younger). My DS eats once every 2-3 hours during the day, but if he's napping or distracted sometimes he goes a little longer.

I'm just so worried he's going to want to eat for comfort ya know?

I have free formula that got sent to me but I don't really want to do that since he's never even tried it before.

No, I understand. I wouldn't try it for the first time now just in case he has a reaction to it (I know, chance are slim, but still.)

I would bet that whoever he's with will be able to distract him long enough, especially if you feed him right before you go. And trust me, your boobs will make you want to come back ASAP!!

Is he in a teething phase now, or are you worried about separation anxiety? I've heard that they usually don't start getting that until 7-9 months. So far my DS has been ok on the very few occasions I've left him...

Anxiety for sure. I don't whose I'm worried about more though lol

Well he definitely isn't going to starve to death so I guess one way or another he'll be fine.

Thank you - you made me feel better! I know I'm just being a bit irrational and panicked ;)

  • I would just leave the 2 oz.

It's 4 hours. Come back when you can. He'll be fine.

  • I would just leave the 2 oz and not add water or anything. Is he eating? You could have whoever is watching him feed him and the use the BM if needed.

  • Kerr, the 2 ounces will be fine.  Isla wouldnt take a bottle at thebeginning when I was working and I would top her off right before I left and sometimes she wouldn't eat the 4 1/2 hours I would be gone.  And if she did eat? It would be like 2 ounces.  He'll be okay.  I also notice she will go far longer when I am not around. (())

  • Kerr, how did it go?

  • How did it go?  Both of my kids have been difficult with taking bottles so there were times when I left them and they refused to eat anything.  They have survived so far. :)

  • Verdict:

My mom tried giving him the bottle about 2 hours in but he would just chew on the nipple.  She was drinking out of  a water bottle and he took a few sips out of that and wanted more so she put some water in a sippy cup and he drank it. She then put the BM in the cup but he refused that once he realized what it was.

She said he was fine and didn't seem interested in eating what so ever.

As soon as I walked in the door he was screaming to eat though!

Lesson learned.. I need to be a bit more prepared.

I am "prepared" in that there's milk in the freezer.

But my boy quit taking bottles and I'm not really willing to fight that fight now. I'm just going to try to get him onto a sippy cup now.

    Glad he survived. Wink

The sippy cup was way easier than the bottle ever was.

My daughter was the same way.  She would drink anything out of a cup except breastmilk.  I actually still can't get her to drink (cow's) milk.

Once he's taking more solids it will be easier to leave him.
