Trouble TTC

I'm sorry, but I have a stupid question.

I am going through cycle monitoring this month because it's my first month going to a fertility clinic and it's their protocol.

On cycle day 10 I had a 15mm follicle and when I went back the next day on cycle day 11 the doctor said that the follicle didn't grow and to come back on cycle day 13. Today is cycle day 13 and when I went back for my scan the follicle was 18mm. Here's my question. A nurse called this afternoon and told me that my bw showed that I was surging and I didn't need to come back until Tuesday to check to see if an egg was released. Since my follicle didn't grow like it should have, is it possible that I won't ovulate today like the nurse said I would? I kind of wanted to go back tomorrow to see what's going on.

So, does the LH surge mean that the follicle is going to release an egg, or could I be having a surge for some other reason? I had a temperature rise today and I know that I didn't ovulate yesterday so I'm kind of confused. My RE said that the follicle releases an egg when it reaches 20mm and if mine doesn't grow 2mm a day like it should, will I ovulate later? I usually don't ovulate until day 17 and todays only day 13, so I think it's still a bit too early.

I'm sorry again for the dumb question and I'm sorry if it's been asked a million times. I'm new to follicle monitoring and I am awful at googling. lol.

Re: I'm sorry, but I have a stupid question.

  • A surge means that ovulation will take place in 12 to 48 hours. If you're taking Clomid or Femara (idk, but you said medicated cycle) you'll most likely ovulate a little bit earlier. Your follie still has a little bit to grow, and on Tuesday when they do b/w they'll know if you ovulated. Don't worry about it too much, and just have a lot of sex this weekend. Good luck!

  • If you had a follie at 18mm then yes, I would think you will O on your own sometime in the next few days (if this is just an observation cycle without trigger shot).  However our bodies are odd.  sometimes they "gear up" to O and then edge back off.  Maybe you won't ovulate until your "regular time" due to gearing up, then backing off, then comes the "real" surge.

But FYI your doc is incorrect (or maybe you misunderstood).  You can O when it hits 20mm, but you can O as follie as small as 16mm ovulate.  And you can have a follie that is larger than 20 that has yet to O.  Example:  When I did my first IUI on clomid, my follie was 25mm when I went in for cd11 monitoring.  I didn't ovulate for another 48ish hours (because they had me give myself the trigger shot that night).  I had a second one at 19mm.  It's not like they hit a magic number and automatically pop.
