December 2011 Moms

Share your laundry experience:)

Are you washing everything in cold, warm, or following washing directions on each item?

Seperating whites and colors?

Are you ironing everything afterwards?

I am finding reading every single item beyond annoying. Maybe I have too much stuff?! IDK...I did not expect this to be such a process.

  • I washed everything on the "normal" cycle. Nothing that a baby wears will need any special treatment since it's all cotton anyway. Cloth diapers go separately. I did three loads--super darks/brights, mediums (pastels), and mostly whites.

Iron? Hell no. Nothing in my house gets ironed, especially stuff that is going to get spit up, pee, poop, and who knows what else on them.

  • I follow machine directions 99% of the time.  I always separate whites from colors, and also separate my colors into greens (we both love the color, it's about 50% of our wardrobe), dark-warm, dark-cold, lightish-cold (yellow, beige, baby blue, light grays, but not whites).  It also helps that we keep four separate hampers in our master bedroom, so we basically pre-sort as we toss in the appropriate pile.

I don't iron or steam unless it is formal wear.  Pulling it out right away from the dryer usually does the trick.

After a while you remember most clothing items and can auto-sort into the correct pile.

If you are talking about baby clothing, everything I own says to wash on cold and tumble dry low.  I throw in a Shout color catcher if I'm washing lights with darks and have never had a problem.

I use Babyganics detergent for everything and no additives/softener.

I occasionally add bleach to my whites.

  • I wash LO's clothes with ours - we use All Free & Clear.  So typically normal cycle on cold.  Dark load and light load.  Definitely not ironing anything!

  • Yes...baby clothes. Should have clarified!

  • I have just been washing everything like I normally wash my clothes. I separate whites, darks, and brights and wash the whites on warm and all the other loads on cold. No fabric softener. And definitely no ironing. We don't even own an iron... Embarrassed

  • Other than diapers, I wash everything on cold, and I don't separate anything. Unless I have something that I think will bleed, I don't bother.

  • I washed everyone in cold water and only separated lights and darks (so the colors didn't run - I didn't bleach anything).  Definitely not ironing.

I also haven't washed every single piece of clothing.  I'm only washing a few days worth of clothes/sleepers (assuming about 3 pieces per day) for now - I'll do more once I know what works for us and how big she is.

Oops. It's been a few weeks since washing diapers. They were washed, washed, washed in hot.

  • I wash everything on cold with All Free and Clear. I don't separate colors and whites, haven't had a problem with washing in cold.

The only thing I've ironed are the valances for the window.

  • We always wash LO's clothing wth ours:

    -Seperate colors

-Wash with 7th generaion free and clear

    -Normal cycle cold

-Line dry (indoor drying rack in winter) and then 8 minutes in the dryer to release wrinkles.

Unless you have a linen suit for your newborn, I see no need to iron any baby clothing until they are wearing oxfords and dress pants.

  • I separate everything into lights, mediums, and darks. All of LO's stuff has just been tossed in with our own, and washed with free & clear detergent. And ironing? Most definitely not.

  • I wash all the kids clothes together, blankets and all.  I only separate if I know its going to bleed or if its never been washed before.  When you have 2+ kids you do whats easy.  I wash there clothes on warm with a natural detergent bought at Costco.  I find that warm helps keeps stains away better than washing on cold.  But that's just me.

  • washed cold, separated colors, whites, i ironed some stuff, but a lot i just folded

I did wash sock and mittens in a lingerie bag

  • I almost always wash everything in cold. We sort into lights, darks, and reds (Badger country, we have lots of red), and if anything isn't machine washable it doesn't get purchased. Wink I am waaaay too lazy to hand wash/do special care on a select few items.

So far we've been washing LO's clothes and blankets separate from ours, but I'm sure once we get into the routine it will all get intermixed.

  • I threw everything into a warm "delicate" cycle and dried on delicate as well. That's what we always did with the newborn clothes. I didn't bother reading the washing instructions on anything except materials I am not used to (we got a couple pseudo-velvet items as gifts but it turned out those were the same for washing). A lot of what we have too is from when DS was a newborn so I know it's been through the wash a bunch of times..just giving it a refresher.

Oh and I never have ironed baby clothes.. I take them out of the drier and fold right away, that makes it no-wrinkle

  • I only read the tags on her fancy Dresses- turned out 3 of them were "line dry". Everything else has been washed in cold with hypoallergenic Purex and put in the dryer. :-)

  • We wash everything in cold except towels and sheets.

I separate my husband's stuff (work clothes, workout clothes, etc) from everyone else's

I usually do the kid's clothes separate because there are four of them so it is a few loads, then my clothes

    Cloth diapers are separate

  • We just started this last night, so this is very timely! We are paying more attention to sorting since it is the first time everything is being washed. We are also washing crib sheets, bassinette linens, towels, blankets, etc, so it looks like we will have about 6 full loads total (only washing nb and 0-3 month clothes). So far, we separated out white and almost whites, will do one that is all very bright pinks (our family is very excited about having a girl, and will try to organize the rest generally according to color and materials we think won't bleed. We aren't following most care instructions, just washing everything on cold in Ivory Snow (didn't think about delicate cycle, but the rest may get that) and putting most in the dryer with no bounce sheet. There will be no ironing, I am pretty sure of that.

  • I did blankets ands sheets but no clothing. I'm paranoid my lo will be a boy and not a girl so I'm waiting until she comes to do clothing. I did her take home outfits only
