I don't post much, mostly lurk...anyways I'm high risk for other reasons. I failed my 1 hour test and did find out I passed my 3 hour GD test but Dr said barely. She said I did pass but to watch my carb and sugar intake. OK, I'm fine with that but I asked how many sugar, carbs grams I should be eating a day..or what should I not go over. I have no clue...I can diet to loose weight but never watched my carbs or sugars. She said she wasn't for sure but to just somewhat follow a diabetic diet? I don't know what that is! I tried googling that but didn't really get anywhere with it. Can any of you GD ladies tell me a gram count on sugars/carbs you ladies follow? I won't have to test so I'm just wanting something of a range to make sure I'm not eating way to many. Which I know I am a sugarholic so I know I need to cut that back.
Thanks in advance for any information! Trying to make sure this baby stays put until he is full term!
Re: GD Question
I only slightly failed my 1-hr and 3-hr tests, so I've been able to manage my GD with diet only. I can't exercise due to bed rest which is why the OB thinks I probably failed to begin with. I did meet with the dietician though and will outline her specs for me below. Also, try these two websites: www.diabetes.org and www.eatright.org. They should have descriptions of what constitutes a "serving" of carbs and which foods have how many grams of carbs in them. Also, would recommend choosing foods that are lower on the Glycemic Index (such as apples over bananas) and choose lower-sugar cereals instead of granola cereals. (Cascadian farms granola cereal seriously spikes my sugar, but I can do Chex mix all day long...!)
As a guideline, I am supposed to have 12-15 servings of carbs throughout the day, each serving consists of 15g of carbs. This is broken up over 6 meals. My example for a day of eating would look like this:
7:45am: 3 servings (45g)
10:00 am: 1-2 serving (15-30g)
12:30 pm: 2-3 servings (30-45g)
3:30 pm: 1-2 servings (15-30g)
6:30 pm: 2-3 servings (30-45g)
8:30 pm: 2 servings (30g)
I'm certainly no expert, but it sounds like we are similary in being "borderline" and just needing to make a few tweaks here and there. Having to test after meals certainly helped me cut out the inbetween snacking (b/c I didn't want it to affect my blood sugar on the monitor) and that alone probably did wonders!
Good Luck!

My GD plan is very similar to PP's plan. I always match carb and protein servings and try and choose high fiber options where I can, as both of those things help control blood sugar. The eating small meals frequently is what helps maintain your sugars throughout the day so you aren't going up and down all day long.
Good luck! This board has a bunch of posts with meal and snack ideas too - just page through the history.
