I'm scared

DH has to do my IM trigger tonight and I'm scared.  I have done all my own injections for IUI and IVF.  IVF #1 was converted to IUI and IVF #2 I had a nurse friend do the IM injection.  This time the injection is at 2:45 am so not only is DH doing it but he's going to be half asleep.  We are also going over a friend's house tonight and I have already given him a drink maximum. EEEEK!  How many of you have had DH do it and how bad was it?

Re: I'm scared

  • I was the same way. I'm a nurse so i'm kind of perfectionistic about the whole thing. I made DH practice with a spare needle on an orange. I wanted to watch his technique. After some practice, I felt better. I pinpointed exactly where I wanted him to go on my behind. He did well. It's hard to reliquish that control. Plus, the trigger is such an important step. I'm sure your DH will do great! Good luck.

  • DH did my IM injection. Mine was at 2:15 am and I think the timing really helped. We didn't have time to freak out about it. Although, I was a little nervous when he tried to draw up the powder without mixing it first. It did take him a little while to wake up. But, he did a great job and I had very little soreness the next day. Good luck!

  • You may want to see if it is okay to mix and draw up the shot before you go to bed. That way all you have to do it take the shot when it comes time. I verbally practiced with my husband the day of the trigger shot. This is the only shot he did, but he was a champ, and did very well. He was a lot more calm than I was!

The important thing to do is to relax the muscle being injected. We did several talking deep breaths in and out, and about the third exhale, he did the shot. I think your body automatically relaxes when you exhale, so I think this trick really helped it to not hurt that much. I then had a heating pad at the ready, and within a few minutes, it was like it never happened.

Just prepare a little bit, it helps with the fear and anxiety. YH will do great!

  • Hey Hon, DH did both of my im shots. Have him watch the video on village fertility phar's website. DH was nervous but he did it and it was fine. Make sure you wake him up with enough time to "wake up" because I did not last time. I was getting mad that we were late since DH had to get something to drink first etc. Are you being retrieved or converted??

  • DH did all my IM injections (trigger $ progesterone).  Have him practice on something before, and rmind him "like a dart"  Honestly the faster he gets it in there the better (this comimg from someone who had DH do over 40 IM injections).  Also if you're standing, put all the weight on the side that he's not doing the injection in.  My ART nurse said that if you raise the side he's doing (i.e. put it on tippy toe) it relaxes the muscle, which makes it hurt a little less.

We are going forward, ER will be on Monday.  For some reason, they feel it would be better to do a 34 hour (after trigger) instead of 36 hours.  It was the weekend nurse (of course because all of my major decisions are made on the weekend) so I didn't even bother to ask for an explanation.  Keep your fingers crossed for me that some more follicles have "popped up" or that the three remaining ones are rock stars.

  • Thanks ladies.  DH did great.  All of your recommendations were so helpful.  DH watched the video twice, I iced first and took the pressure off that leg, as someone had suggested.  Everything went great.  DH was really cute, he talked me through each step like they do at the doctors.  "Now I'm spreading the skin, okay, sticking it in, pulling back the plunger, okay, no blood and injecting."  Thanks again.  You women are awesome!!
