Preemies

RSV experts a ?

My DS is almost 3 he was born at 34 weeks.  He has some type of respiratory infection. We went to see pedi and were sent to ER to rule out pneumonia and were sent home with antibiotic and instructions to follow up with pedi in 48 hours (xray negative for pneumonia).  We are going back to pedi tomorrow.  DH was goggling ds's symptoms and viral infections including RSV kept coming up.  Do any of you know what symptoms to look for or what pedi will do to treat him?  Is there anything we can do to help him get over the infection?

  • You want to look for any respiratory symptoms (like coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing), if you notice any problems with breathing, of course see a doctor right away.  The main thing to do for RSV is keep suctioning his nose, there is no antibiotic for RSV.  You just have to make sure to keep LO well hydrated (make sure he is peeing).  Basically you just kinda let the virus take its course, like any other cold...and make sure LO is comfortable...HTH!

  • Just wanted to add that b/c your LO is older RSV is a little less serious Younger preemies are more likely to have complications, that is why they get synagis shots. GL and hope your LO feels better soon!

  • My son had RSV last winter. One thing that helped him some was always keeping a humidifier running for him 24hrs a day. Just a idea. Hope things get better soon

  • Thanks all - good to have a reminder that it isn't as serious now he is older.  Just got a scare thinking he would be readmitted to the hospital - and we already did that once.  I just want to do everything I can to make him feel better he is so tired and cranky.

  • Thanks all - we did take him into the bathroom and steam it up good gave him bath cryons to play with and he drew over everything.  We went back to the pedi yesterday.  His breathing was back to normal, so the antiboitics must be working. I get so freaked about having to go back to the hospital - I don't know if it is a preemie thing or a mom thing.
