Glucose testing in 1st tri? <UPDATE>

I had my first OB appointment yesterday and they had me go downstairs for a 1 hour glucose test. Is it normal to test this early? I didn't question it at the time because I didn't think about it at the time, but the longer I thought about it the more it didn't make sense. I have been tested annually for diabetes because it does run in my family. I am overweight, but have always tested negative...

I had just never heard of them doing it this early.

UPDATE: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I failed it. Have to go tomorrow for the 3 hour. Boo.

  • I've heard of it being done w/ previous gestational diabetes and w/ a strong family history. I'm sure the yearly tests you get are the reason for it.

  • PCOS in puts you at risk for insulin resistance and they want to control any level of diabetes as early as possible for the health of your baby. Being overweight definitely increases your risk of having high blood sugar levels and even if you've only been "borderline" before, your doctor may want you to follow a diabetic diet while pregnant and monitor your sugars earlier rather than later. This test could also serve as a baseline for future tests.

Plus, you're seeing an RE, they're going to be more agressive with testing! They just want you to have a successful pregnancy with a healthy baby =)

  • I had it at the end of my first trimester and once again I have GD.

Honestly, it's not that bad. Get in with a dietitian and work on your food intake and start checking numbers. You might not need any insulin, but you might.

I have it at bed time b/c my am numbers are just over what they like. The rest of the day I'm terrific and control with my diet and exercise.

It's improved my knowledge of food and fueling my body. I'd be happy to answer any questions if you have em.

     Good luck!
