Trouble TTC

Is it worth it to try injects?

My RE is rather sure that we need to move to IVF.  Being completely OOP, we are super hesitant to consider IVF. Actually, the physical, emotional, and financial aspects are all quite scary to me.  I've asked to try an injects/ IUI cycle, and my RE is willing to do it.  But he's made it clear that he doesn't think it's worth it.

Briefly our history is:  Clomid/TI= BFN, Clomid/IUI=C/P, Femara/TI=BFN, Femara/IUI with a total fluke dismal sperm count=BFN, Femara/IUI back to normal sperm count=BFN.  I feel like we've only had 2 real attempts at IUI, and one of them we actually managed to get pregnant briefly.

I have heard some ladies report that injects can help produce a better quality egg.  My FSH is elevated, all other tests normal, and I worry that egg quality may be my issue.

What do you ladies think?  DH really leans to the injects.  I'm so torn.  I want to try injects and I want it to work!  I don't want to do IVF (insert huge whiney voice).

Thanks for listening and any advice.

Re: Is it worth it to try injects?

  • Yes. I think doing an injects cycle prior to IVF is great data for how you might respond for an IVF cycle (practice before the big show).

And if your RE was willing to do other cycles I wonder why he is pushing IVF. Many many many people have success with injects over oral meds.

  • All of what Mrs. Slick said.  Plus since this is our plan for our third IUI based on what my RE said re my weak ovulation - he thinks it's just what my eggs need to make sure they're mature.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  I can understand how hard it is to map out a plan when it comes to the expense, plus physical & emotional toll each will take on you.  I hope you make the best decision for you.

  • I think you are right to want to do an inject cycle before IVF.  I got my first BFP on my first inject cycle after doing clomid and femara just like you.  Unfortunately it did end quickly but hopefully your will be your take home baby!

  • One RE we met with wanted to jump straight to IVF. The one we are with now wanted to start with injects/IUI, for all the reasons mentioned already. Even if IUI is not successful for us, we have a much better idea how my body responds to the injects, rather than experimenting with an IVF cycle.

  • I agree with pp.  I'd do an injects/IUI cycle with the hope that it will work.  And if it doesn't work it's a great way to know how you will respond to the meds so an IVF cycle is more likley to go well.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • I also agree to try injects first. We did three Clomid cycles and then decided to try at least one injects cycle. Good thing I did, because I over-responded. Now my RE knows what to change for next time.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies.  This is so hard.  I really don't want to do IVF.  And my RE really thinks I should.  Sigh.  I appreciate your confidence in me trying an injects cycle.
