Parenting after 35

Hello ladies! Introduction...

Just wanted to introduce myself...  You ladies look like a nice group to "hang" with here on the bump.  I've been on the 3-6 month board a lot, but I feel quite old over there.

A little about myself:  I'm a FTM/SAHM at 37, who's in WAY over her head and not afraid to admit it.  This staying at home thing is hard, and I now know that infants are not for the faint of heart.  I never thought I'd meet my match in a 4 month old, who by the way is so cute and so fun that I don't mind it on most days.  My LO doesn't go to sleep "drowsy but awake" (and probably never will) but on most nights she sleeps until 4:00am.  She's a terrible napper, but I'm pretty much okay with that, and I use J&J products (which according to some on the 3-6 month board are made by the devil himself).  I breastfeed mainly because I'm too cheap to pay for something we can get for free, and most of the time you'll find Harlow in bed with me after she wakes up at 4:00.  Oh, and she sleeps in her swing, too.  My motto is "whatever works!" and I hope no one here is offended by that.  As far as addictions go, I can't live without my Keurig, red wine, or Words With Friends.

So, after reading over some of the posts about how slow this board has gotten, I look forward to maybe adding a little to it...  We'll see how I do!

  • Hi and welcome!

We're all over the map parenting-style-wise, and none of us really offend easily anyway ;)

DS was, and still sometimes, an absolutely atrocious sleeper. We ended up bed-sharing until he crawled because he would. not. sleep. in his cradle. Some infants are just crappy sleepers and some are awesome sleepers, though I tell myself that the parents of those kids must have made some sort of deal with the devil Stick out tongue

  • Welcome and congrats on your little one!

I'm also a FTM/SAHM of a rambunctious 2 year old.. and I'm 44!  So I can totally relate to being overwhelmed, etc.

This board can get slow at times, but it's drama-free!

  • Hiya, and welcome!

I hear ya on the overwhelmed bit (and also how extreme cuteness and ability to make me laugh trump being overwhelmed any day).  I bed-share with DS because like stever's M, he won't even look at his crib.

Congrats and I hope you enjoy your time on this board!

  • Hi and welcome! Go with the flow is good! I'm pretty relaxed, it's easier to cope when you're overwhelmed. I like coffee. and I'm sure that this drama free board can liven things up a little! Or else go look on gear, I'm sure I'm about to be dubbed the safety warden or worse. But I'm in a pissy mood today, so I'm poking alligators with a short stick.

ETA: meh, J&J, if it works, it works. I don't get worked up about much else.

Welcome to the board... I think it's normal for the first year to feel overwhelmed...You have so much to learn and just when you think you have it figured out...it changes.  You get so much unnecessary 'free' advice from do-gooders.

I say don't fix what's not broken.  Also, I found through experience what works for one doesn't always work for another.  I thought some moms would kill me when they heard I let Maddie sleep in her carseat after we got home, sometimes for as long as it took to get a meal done (of course only if she was asleep).

As for sleeping, Maddie can go from 10 pm - 2 am or sometimes 9 pm - 3 am but I usually count on getting up at least 1 if not twice during the night.  When I first returned to work it almost killed me but now I seem to get by on two segments of 3-4 hours each of sleep.  Hopefully it won't be like that forever.

  • Welcome! I am also 37 y old and FTM of an almost 4 month old boy. For now I get a lot of help from my DH and my mom who is visiting until the end of November, but it still gets frustrating sometimes. Generally enjoying motherhood though. My LO does not STTN. He is also breastfeed and he wakes up 2-3 times at night to eat. Just the last two days we have gotten 6 hour stretches without eating. We will see if that will last.

Iknow you will enjoy this board!

  • Welcome to the board.  You will find we do not get to judgy unless your LO is 16 and still has to co-sleep and BF before going to prom.

  • Welcome!  "Whatever works" is what has worked for me, tooSmile  Once you go with the flow, things eventually fall into place.

  • Welcome to the board!  For the most part, I feel like I'm winging this whole motherhood thing, but DS is alive and kicking so I must be doing something right!

  • i was 37 my i had DD and i understand that whole in over your head thing and i know what you mean about staying at home thing is hard, which is why dh is a sahd! he loves it and this arragement works for us. anyway, i found all the cliche's to be true, well mostly, it does get easier and not all babies are the same, and most of it is a phase and will pass just when you get use to it! My dd is 20mos and she is currently bed-sharing most nights, i think she is teething again and this round of molars has been a killer on us, i stopped trying to hide or be ashamed of bed-sharing, it's what works for us, we all have to get sleep right, so for now that's what we are doing, we do plan to get her into her crib at some point soon , we will see.......

    good luck, and just breathe.
