2nd Trimester

Caffeine... vent

I have been getting some smack from people about drinking caffeine while pregnant, and I just have to say that caffeine isn't going to do much to the baby. Well there isn't much proof of it anyway. I have gotten coffee from coffee stands and what not and they always ask if I want it decaf. If I wanted it decaf I would have asked for it that way. Sometimes they give me decaf anyway. I have been a Batista for about 10 years; I can taste the difference. Thank you for wasting my time coffee stand!

Re: Caffeine... vent

  • I would be so mad if they specifically gave me something I didn't want.  Caffeine is okay in moderation.  There is proof of the harm if you consume too much, but I have a mt. dew every day and that isn't changing until I'm 7 or 8 months.  I did side-eye a friend that was drinking caffeine allll evening while at their house and it was obviously her norm.
  • Loading the player...
  • I am kind of the same way... I have one can of diet cherry coke a day (but lately I cant drink all of it for some reason) but I firmly believe that if you can have 200-300mg of caffiene a day then why not?

btw... not to be mean or anything... but if you were in the business for that long you would know its a Barista... Batista is a pro wrestler lol... (but Im sure it was just a typo)

  • I agree that having too much isn't safe for everyone. Everything in moderation has been my motto. But having a latte in the morning and maybe one in the afternoon isn't going to do much. From what I've read it needs to be a whole lot more than that to do real damage. I could be wrong though lol. :)

  • caffeine is okay .. in moderation .. next time they screw w/you and give you what you did not ask for .. just go all crazy pregnant lady on their asses and tell them what's up .. ! if you were a barista for 10 years, I'm sure you can easily back yourself up .. pregnancy is stressful enough and having ppl screw w/you and not give you what you've asked for would really get frustrating in my opinion ..

  • I just tell people my dr said its ok to have some. I get it a lot from people who were preggo like 7-10 yrs ago. I think they were told not to have any and do not realize times have changed.
  • ok, all this coffee talk is making me want a nice warm vanilla latte right now haha

  • Actually the studies that say that caffeine in excess is bad aren't even as conclusive as other studies about other risks. My mom had POTS of coffee when pregnant with me and I turned out just fine.

Regardless, you're allowed to have 200 mg a day!  Screw the critics. Wrong or right, kit's your decision.

  • My doctor told me I couldn't have ANY caffeine... And I said BUT WHY??! And she told me there was a study done (paraphrasing here) about young children that died in car accidents, other causes, etc. When those children donated their organs (hearts), she told me that they could tell JUST by looking at the heart wether the mother had drank caffeine while he was pregnant. Wtf! I should have asked her where to find this study.. Has anyone heard of it? It really freaked me out!

Maybe so.. I am going to ask her specifics on that study when I go back.. It's really been bugging me.

  • My doctor says that 300 mg a day is safe (I never drink that much but that's what she said was the limit). A can of Dr. Pepper has 45 mg, so you would have to drink a lot of soda to reach the 300 mg limit (sorry don't drink coffee so I don't know the caffeine content). The point is drinking some in moderation is ok.

OP that is ridiculous if they are switching your coffee at the coffee stand.

That doesn't sound scientific at all and goes against the advice that pretty much every OB has given to any of us on the BUMP.

Anyway, I didn't drink coffee for the first trimester because it made me feel sick...and now I'm half a cup 3-4 times a week because OMG it helps the constipation so much.

  • I get this a lot too! DH's family is big on getting after me because "You're not supposed to have caffeine!"  I appreciate the concern, but my OB said it was ok to have 200mg a day. I usually have one soda two/three days out of the week; baby girl will be fine!

There was a time (like when my mom was pregnant) that women were told to not drink any caffeine during pregnancy...that's why my father was shocked to see that I was drinking tea at 7 weeks.  I just calmly explained to him that it was fine.
