Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Awake issues!

LO has been STTN (11 hours) for about 2 months.  He'll be 6 months in a few days so I decided to post here.  About 5 nights ago he decided to change his sleep schedule.  Instead of going to sleep at 7 or 7:30, he will sleep for an hour or two then wake up.  He's hungry so we have been giving him an extra bottle.  It takes him anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half to fall back to sleep.  The thing is, he is exhausted.  If we put him in his crib he puts his head down like he's going to sleep.  If we hold him, he snuggles right in but just can't seem to get himself back to sleep even with bottle, paci, rocking, singing.  We keep his room quiet and if we do go in we don't talk to him, just feed or pat/give paci.  I can't do CIO.  His daytime naps haven't changed (2 or 3 naps 30 - 45 minutes each).  This morning I woke him up at his (old) usual time even though he's been up an extra 2 hours last night.  I'm not hugely into schedules but I do like him to have a nice routine.  He does seem like he's teething but when he wakes up he doesn't cry (as long as I am with him).  Teething will involve lots of crying, right?

Re: Awake issues!

  • Teething doesn't always involve a lot of crying.  He could just be changing.  When is his last nap?  You might try making his bedtime a little later.

  • I hear there is a growth spurt at 6 months.  Also, if your LO is working on learning to crawl or some other developmental milestone, that may cause him to sleep less for a time.  I can't / won't do CIO either (at least not now), and my LO is up every 2 hours all night long.  She eats and goes right back to sleep (I BF), so I'm lucky there, but it is exhausting.  I hope your LO gets back to being a great sleeper again soon.
  • We have the same issue. LO wasn't STTN until about a week ago and only did it a few nights! It's hard to keep him up until about 8 or 9 (so he doesn't sleep and then get up because hungry), but he only takes 2 hour and a half naps, IF I'm lucky. He used to sleep 2 hours for each nap, but that changed too! :(

So basically, I'm in the same boat as you. I have been trying to keep him up as long as I can (for his last feeding), but he just can't stand himself and will fall out while I'm holding him and doing something in the kitchen. It's ridiculous.

I don't think it would be teething, unless your LO was crying a lot. But thats just my thoughts, because my LO hasn't started teething yet...
