We have always had a childproof cover on Ethan's doorknob so he can't wander around the house. I don't know if we should take it off. I don't want him to wander . He climbs out of his bed every night and sleeps by the door. I don't know if he is scared and wants us and can't open the door. I know that when he is potty trained he will have to be able to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Do your kids stay in their bed/room at night?
Re: how do you deal with wandering at night?
Awww. Do you have a video monitor? I don't know how your bedrooms are laid out, but can you put a gate at the top of the stairs and take the safety knob off and your door open to see what he does? I definitely wouldn't want him to be scared - but obv I wouldn't want him wandering either. We have wall mounted gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
We are super lucky, Evan sits in his bed and waits for us. I think he has gotten up twice - both times because he was wrestlng with a pillow or something and it flies off the bed. He jumps out to get it and back in again as fast as he can, haha! But we do have a safety handle on the inside of his door just in case.
R is like Evan, he sits and bed and waits 99% of the time. Now that he has his big real bed, he sits and waits even more because it is so high. He has a stool but usually just waits.
I do have a thinger on the knob to keep him from escaping. Once he starts pt'ing at night I will take it off. I do have a video monitor, so I can see what he is doing or if he does get up. Wouldn't you hear him if he was trying to get out or was scared? When my brother was a baby he used to sleep in the door way too, he was booted from his crib at 18 mos when the next baby came. My mom put eye hook locks on his doors (there were 2)...that was terrible IMO. One was on the inside and one was on the outside (the door that led to her room).....I can't imagine having to get them open in an emergency! At least we can open R's door without worrying about that!
I turned Mike's doorknob around so that the lock was on the outside and we could lock him in at night. It didn't even last a full night, he was pounding on the door crying. Of course, he never wandered...it was a beeline from his bed to ours asking to sleep with us.
Alex is still in his crib, but we've got a gate in his doorway for now. There is no good way to gate the top of the stairs, so I'm hoping that he's proficient at stairs before he potty trains.
We still have a gate across Eves door. The possibility of her getting out of her room scares me too much since her room is right at the top of the stairs. I don't think the doorknob thingys would work in our house since its old and the doors dont' really fully latch.. they can usually just be pushed or pulled open.If she really wanted to, I'm sure she could climb the gate.. but she hasn't tried. Like others said, usually at nighttime and in the morning she usually stays in bed til we get her.. Naptime is another story though.
Anyway.. she still wears a pull up at night.. I figure it would be a long time before she would need to be able go to the potty by herself.. so I will worry about that when the time comes.
