4 months and only 12 lbs...

Kendel is a petite little girl. At her 4 mo check she was 12 lbs 3 oz and 23.5 inches long. She was 7 lbs 8 oz and 19in long to begin with. My doc doesn't seem to worried as she is consistently gaining weight 1 lb per month) but I look at all the other post and pics of your babies and I can't help but worry.

Any other petite babies out there?

  • DS3 isn't small (15 pounds at 4 months), but both of my girls were... they were only 18 pounds by 1 year old (around 11-12 pounds at 4 months).  Try not to worry, my pedi always says, as long as they are eating and growing (even a little) they are fine.  She would only start to worry if the kids didn't gain at all, or lost weight. HTH!

  • I personally have a super chunker (16 lbs) but I will tell you that I have a friend from high school (just fb friends now really) whose daughter just went in for her 1 year appt and only weighs 15 lbs!!!!!  They are putting her on a high calorie supplement of some kind, but her mom didn't indicate that there was anything scary wrong with her.  She's just really tiny and doesn't gain well I guess.  If your ped isn't worried, I don't think you should be either.  I TOTALLY understand the tendency to worry (I'm super guilty of that regarding many other things) but try not to get hung up on it :)

  • Lucy was only 10 lbs, 8 oz at our visit a month ago. Her 4 month visit is November 9th and I don't anticipate her being much heavier. The pediatrician said not to worry and that EBF babies just don't gain as quickly.

     *I still worry.

  • My DD is small and I worried like crazy when she dropped in her percentiles, etc.  We had weigh-ins and all, but she was not really gaining.  One pound a month is sufficient as far as I know.  DD is still small 22lbs at 2 years and I am finally fine with it.  Peds stressed a bit over it early on, but it all works out.  As long as they are gaining a bit and growing.  Some people are smaller than others.

  • At Judah's 4 month check up he was 12lbs 6 oz and 25 inches (I can't remember the exact length but I think that's right).  He is just long and skinny.  The doctor had no concerns so I'm not worried about it right now.  I do think that he has gained a good bit in the last month though (he turned 5 months yesterday) but won't have another appointment until 6 months.

I'm glad to hear another small boy on here!  Mine is 13 pounds 9 ounces today at five months.  He's long too and I'm not nor is his doctor concerned as he is actively gaining weight.  He was really small at birth so he has some ground to catch up on.

  • At DDs 4 month visit she was 12 lbs and like 9oz or something like that. She is also 25 inches tall. She is long and skinny just like her mama

  • My little girl was 11 pounds and 13ounces at 4 months. She was 23.75 inches long. Our pedi said that she was perfect!

  • At 4 her 4 month well visit Cate was 10 lbs 13oz. She was 6 lb 13 oz @ birth. Because she has been in the 5-10% all along the dr isn't worried. She's just a little girl, that's all! I'm interested to see if she doubles her birth weight by her 6 month well visit. My guess is no. Although we went from EBF-ing @ 4 months to exclusively formula now, so maybe she will gain faster.

Liv was 12lbs 2oz and 25 inches at our 4month check.

She was born 6lbs 7oz and 19 inches.

We were at Children's on Monday and she still is pretty light at 12lbs 8oz. She is in the 8th %ile for weight. At our 2 month appointment, our pediatrician did comment about wiggly/squirmy she was and that babies like her tend to "not get very fat." He said it wasn't a concern as long as we are feeding her well. But I was getting really worried especially after our 4month check and she was at 10%ile.

She is going down on the %ile because I didn't realize my milk supply was tanking. We are having to supplement now and hopefully she is gaining weight.

  • E was 12 lbs 4 oz at her 4 month appt. The doctor was not worried since she was small to begin with and gaining weight.

  • Violet was 11lbs 14ozs, 24 inches at her 4 month last week.  Her ped isn't worried either.

  • My LO is smaller but my doc isn't concerned since her growth chart is consistent. I'm only 5'0" so I didn't expect her to be huge.

  • At his 4 month checkup, DS weighed 12.2 lbs and is 26 inches long. The doctor seemed a little concerned, but didn't say anything other than to start him on solids. I think his weight to height ratio puts him in the >3rd percentile.

  • At his 4 month checkup, Max was 12 lbs, 2 oz and 25 inches (1.5 percentile for weight). In our case, par of that may be due to the fact that I did not know my supply was low for a while and he didn't get enough to eat for a little while. However, he is completely healthy and thriving and our pediatrician is not worried at all. He recommended not starting any solids until 6 months - and not to rush into them then - because M would get more calories from the breastmilk/formula combo we've got going now.

  • I have a little guy too but he was small at birth (6 lbs 0 oz).  He's 10 lbs 15oz as of Wednesday.  Our 4 month appoinment is on the 7th so I'm expecting him to be tipping the scale at 11 lbs.
  • Riley is 14lbs....not too far off...I wouldn't worry.  She is taller though Smile  she's 26 inches long.
  • Reading this post has made me feel much better.  We had our 4 month check up and DS weighted in at 13.2 lbs and 25.5 inches.  The pedi was not concerned, but I still worry anyway!

  • Maya was 11lbs 6oz at her 4 month and (I believe) 23.5" long.  I posted about it b/c I am forced to sometimes alternate between a military and civilian pedi. After already going through this with the military pedi I now have to see the civilian pedi at the end of this week for a weight check b/c they don't share records.  They both express concern that she was born average weight (7lbs 7oz) at then dropped in percentile.  At her 2 month I wasn't worried in the least.   Now the pedi has me second guessing myself and thinking I'm not producing enough milk Sad

We go back on the 4th for the weight check.

  • Our little guy is 14.1 and 24 in. at 4 mo. I thought that was kind of small, but then this girl I know on FB was saying he was a chunker (I still don't think so) and that her 1 year old is only 17 lb. I wouldn't be worried at all, perhaps she will just be petite or hasn't hit a big growth spurt yet : )

  • Abbey technically isn't a lightweight (she was15lbs at her 4mth checkup) but because she is tall (she was just shy of 26inches--95th percentile), she's skinny looking.  But DH and I are slim too...are you small?  Babies are just like anyone else...they come in all different shapes and sizes...as long as Kendel is gaining weight, seems healthy and alert then you have nothing to worry about.  I think we tend to get caught up in the "numbers" instead of focusing on how healthy the baby actually looks!

  • yup, my DD was 11lb 5oz, 23.5 inches at 4 months old.  I think that put her in the 8th percentile.  She was born early, which is contributing to her petite size, but you aren't alone.

We were nearly the same.  13.1 though, and he is 26" long.  Dr. wasn't concerned as he was 8.7 at birth, 10.6 at 2 months, and 13.1 at 4 months, so he is gaining at a fairly consistent rate.

  • DS is on the other side of the charts at 17 lbs. 10 oz. at his 4 month check up Indifferent but my niece who is about a year older than DS is tiny tiny tiny. DS is very close to passing her up on weight. Her pedi was concerned and even said she was "failing to thrive". I think the difference though is she was born at normal (and maybe even a bit above normal) weight at 7 lbs. 14 oz. My SIL is tiny though, so maybe she is just going to be a small girl too.

If your concerned, just talk to her pedi about it!

  • Yup, Callie was only 12 lb 4oz at her 4 month.

  • I'm not sure what their weight is these days, but we still have quite a few pieces of 0-3mo. clothes in circulation. They are almost six months old, but they were tiny from the beginning.
  • G weighed 17.5 lbs 3 wks ago... I worry he's getting too fat. Lol. Us moms worry about everything, it's in the job description I think ;) but the reality is there's a huge range of normal and like others said so long as there's consistent gain and no major changes there's no need to stress it. For the record, I'm 5 ft 100 lbs... I can barely carry my 4 month old!! Where did this giant baby come from?!? He is literally half my length!
  • My LO is 5 and a half months and she is only around 11 lbs. She is really small; our pedi said that it will probably take her a year to catch up to other babies her age. Our LO was 3 and a half weeks early though so it's normal for her.
