Pregnant after 35

Not gaining enough weight. Never had this problem before.

(I would just like to preface this with an apology to the poster who was asking for tips on diabetes & calories yesterday.  My very happy response has just been blown out of the water by my OBs)

I am not gaining enough weight.  Both of my OB's came in to talk with me today.  If we don't include the 10lbs that I gained while on Clomid, I have gained a total of 4lbs so far.

I'm not super skinny - I'm 5'6" and was in the 140's pre Clomid.  This is approx. a size 8 US.   3 cycles of Clomid + 10lbs put me in the 150's.  I now weigh 162 at 34 weeks pregnant.

Since I have GD, my diet is somewhat restrictive - i.e. very low carb, no sugar, etc...the no sugar thing I added myself b/c it just messed with my numbers too much so I took it out rather than figure it out.  I'll still eat a portion of potatoes or pasta occasionally but, truthfully, I have absolutely no desire for it anymore.

I never go hungry.  Ever.  I don't have the will power for it.  I'm constantly eating/snacking - yogurt, almonds, cheese, a serving of fruit or veggies, protein bars, protein shakes.  3 solid meals a day.

Any suggestions on how to get any more diabetic friendly calories into my diet?

That's a good question, and unfortunately don't have an answer for you.  But would be very interested in hearing if you find out anything.  I am diabetic and would love to know the answer to get the most benefit from my diet.   Best of luck to you.  Did your OB give you any suggestions or referral to nutritionist?  They might be able to help you out.  Just a suggestion.

I second the referral to see an RD, they are the experts, not MD's.

Protein shakes are the first thing I thought of, you can take it on the go, and that way you aren't worried about too many carbs.

Maybe higher fat proteins?  Like more nuts and fattier meats?  I'm not sure, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

I had to work hard to gain weight with my first pregnancy (I'm naturally kinda skinny anyway). It's hard work - I really got tired of eating! I try to eat a lot of nuts, avocado, protein shakes, crackers, bagels, peanut butter.

I like the posts from bumpies already...including the idea of fattier meats. Do you eat steak at all? And what about condiments like sour cream or butter on whole wheat bread? I also love protein shakes and I know you can find those without added sugar...but full of vitamins and healthy stuff! Good luck to you! I am on the other end of the spectrum...probably will need to lose 30 lbs after baby is born today. Blahhh! :-) It's allllll worth it :-)!

Thanks All!  I'm doing protein shakes almost everyday - usually one in the morning and at night.  I'm so glad that I'm not sick of them because I've done these everyday for the last few weeks :)

When I pushed back on the OB yesterday and asked where I could add more calories - I just got a blank stare.  I gave them a run down of a typical day's worth of calories and didn't get any helpful response.  I'm making a call to my specialist today who will send me back to my nutritionist, I'm sure.  The RE is the one who has paid attention/taken care of me through this entire pregnancy anyway.  I just wish she would deliver!  If my OB didn't come with such a great technical/proficient recommendation from my RE, I would have been gone long ago.

Silver lining, though!  If I ever need to lose weight, I know exactly which diet works best for me :)

This is unfortunately not a problem I am having- but I suggest Walnuts. They are loaded with calories (400 for half a cup) and full of good fats that make your baby smart.

Half a cup a day equals about a pound of weight gain a week.

Is the baby on track?  My doctor has said that the baby will take its nutrition first and that I could gain nothing and have a perfectly healthy, normal-sized baby. Everyone gains differently.  There are plenty of women on other boards who weigh less pg than pre-pg, and a similar number who have gained 40+ lbs at 30 weeks.  If your LO is on track, I would not worry about your own weight gain.

The weird thing is at 31 weeks they were estimating the baby to be about 3/4 to 1lb bigger than he should be - but I'm measuring small.  I'm getting another u/s next week to check progress.  I think we can attribute this to the GD.

I just want to make sure that I'm doing the best thing for me and LO.  I feel fine/strong for the most part so it's all a bit confusing.
