I'm so freaking excited! We've wanted to take a short child-free vacation for a while, but the boys did soooo badly the one time they spent the night away from home that we were a bit reluctant to try again. But Ben's parents said they'd be happy to have them, which means now I get to start planning our trip - wheeee!
Ben has been dying to go on another cruise since we took one a couple of years ago, so my plan right now is to go on a 3-night one in Feb. I want it to be a surprise, so I'm telling Ben we'll be staying at a B&B...hopefully I can keep it secret for that long.
I know some people (including my mom) don't believe that parents should take vacations without their children, but we - especially me - could really use a break. I know it's still months away, but I'm so excited! I can't wait to just sit and relax and have NO demands whatsoever on my time. *bliss*

Good for you guys! A cruise sounds like the ultimate relaxing vacation.
I never understood this. My parents use to leave us with friends/grandparents for 10 days to 2 weeks every other year. My brother and I loved it. We got to spend quality time with our grandparents or have a week-long sleepover at our friends' house. And our parents seemed so happy and relaxed when they returned home. Plus the souvenirs they brought us were always awesome
The hubs and I totally plan on taking vacays without our LO. We love to travel and we go stir crazy if we're not out exploring some place new. I feel like if I get some downtime to recharge and do what I love, I'll be a better parent.
To quote my mother, doing that kind of stuff without your children is "stealing time from your family."
To be honest, I don't get it either. To me, it's all about recharging the batteries - not to mention getting some time to focus on your other half in a "just us" kind of way (as friends/lovers/etc vs parents and all the responsibilities that come with that).
Plus I know that as much as I'll enjoy the relaxation and freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want, I'll also miss them. Like on my last work trip, which was just one night - I was thrilled to be "free" but at the same time I totally missed my little dudes.
We'll take the majority of our vacations as a family, but I see no problem with us going away for a couple of nights every once in a while, or the boys spending a week during the summer with their grandparents when they're older.

Child-free? Vacation? What language is this? It's unrecognizable and sounds like gibberish to me. =P The only time I am child-free and even remotely close to anything resembling a vacation is when I'm working our booth at our bi-weekly craft fairs at the Marriott Beach Club in Ko Olina, hahah.
A cruise sounds awesome! And a much deserved treat for both you and Ben! I hope you're able to surprise Ben. He'll love it!
My parents never took vacations without me but I think I would have loved it. I always enjoyed sleepovers at my friends' houses and I even did a sleepover at my mom's friend's house once (she had grandkids around my age). Yes, a vacation is good for the parents to give them a chance to recharge and relax, but I think it can also be great for the kid(s) too!
That sounds heavenly!! I hope you guys truly enjoy and relax
We definitely want to try and get away a little bit just to recharge. I know that LO is young, but I feel like I really, really need it. We plan to spend a night at a hotel and make a big date night out of it when we're back home in HI during the upcoming holidays. We can't wait!
that sounds wonderful, I don't see anything wrong with a child free vacation. I could only really do short get aways because there are just too many places I want to take J so I can't imagine leaving him on a longer trip to somewhere exciting.
even though I am adamant that my work travel IS NOT a vacation (as DH thinks it is) I do love the "me" time. A quiet flight with my ipod and kindle, etc.
DH and I are both taking a kid free vacation - but not together... in Jan/Feb because I made it a priority to have a girls weekend with my BFF (she lives far a way) and we use to do a yearly girls weekend which hasn't happened since I got married. So I think that is long overdue as well and a connection I don't want to lose.
So DH gets to go somewhere with his friends to make it fair.
SUPER jealous but SO excited for you!!!
We have no problem going on vacation or leaving LO with family overnight. In fact, I can't wait until we go on our first kidless vacay. Our friend is the president of a custom home builder and they are currently working on a project in Kauai and we all have been talking about maybe going in June 2012 with him and his wife. HECK YES!!! If we do, we will probably leave R with the MIL as I don't think my mom is ready for a week straight of watching R As many issues as I have with the MIL, I know and trust she can handle this and will actually love it. Off subject...ooops.
Yay for a child-free vacay! Hope you can keep the cruise a surprise, sounds lovely

LOL!
Lisa in Oz - That's awesome...so jealous! I was hoping to have ONE NIGHT away with the hubs before #2 makes his debut but it's not likely to happen. We've not been away, just the two of us, since before we TTC'd Libby.
Anyway...I hope you have a fabu time and think it's doubly awesome that you're making it a surprise for Ben by going on a cruise! NICE!

so awesome and I am super, super jealous! Happy planning and good luck pulling off the surprise. I am sure you will be able to do it!
hah, MH and I agreed (while I was pg) that when the kids were old enough, we'd start taking 2 vacations a year - one with, and one w/o kids. and the kids would stay with grandparents, which i think would be great for everyone!
i think it's awesome that you're going to do a cruise as a surprise for Ben! sounds perfect - super relaxing!!
OMG I'm so excited for you. Mark and I have taken a child free vacation since Kai was 6 months old. Its only been for one or two nights but it is sooooo important for you as parents. Three nights on a boat sounds amazing!!!
