Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Is my baby the only one?

DD used to smile up at me a lot from her crib, or when I was feeding her (just happy to see my face), but has stopped doing it. She also used to babble a lot, but has stopped, and now mostly only whiles (eh, eh, eh). Sometimes makes the occasional vowel sound. She responds to toys, sounds and touch though with smiles and sometimes giggles.

Our pediatrician is already setting us up with Early On, and we are also scheduled for an MRI to check her brain / eye development as a precaution. My pedi mentioned regression is sometimes a sign of a problem, so I am very nervous.

I am just wondering if any of your babies went through something similar and ended up being doing these things again or developing fine? I have read sometimes that if they are working on new skills in one area, sometimes they lose focus on others, so I am hoping maybe that is it. DD is working on sitting up on her own, and also rolling from belly to back (she does it sometimes, but hasn't mastered it yet).

I was going to say this. How long has the regression been? Did she just stop these things recently or for a long time?  Hopefully she's just busy learning to sit and perfect her rolling skills!  I know when P started rolling he stopped "talking" as much. He was so quiet it freaked me out, but he's back to his babbling self now and rolling like a barrell! He's trying to crawl, so i'm curious to see if he "forgets" another skill for awhile.

Hopefully it's just a phase and she'll get back to those skills soon. GL!

  • my DD doesn't babble at all and I am starting to get worried. She just yells and laughs...no vowel sounds at all. She is a really quiet baby. She does crawl and scoot and roll all over the place. I heard that some babies develop one skill and the other lags. She use to talk and babble all the time but stopped a couple of months ago...now your post has me a little more worried. Let me know how it goes.

  • My DD started doing this too. She now babbles all the time again. It's like she forgot or something. It happened when she was about the same age as your DD. She was just starting to sit unassisted, then a few weeks later she started crawling. Now she babbles and says more sounds and is a little bundle of energy. Hopefully it's like PP said: she is just busy going through a lot of milestones right now.

I wouldn't worry too much, DD actually did this with the babbling once before and started up again. I am more concerned about her lack of eye contact and social smiles along with the regression of her babbling. but it makes me feel better that others have had similar changes in their babies chatting.

It has probably been at least a month, maybe a little longer (Up to 2 months I would guess). But, she was sick, then she was teething, now she is learning new skills, so I kept thinking maybe all that was effecting her. I am still hoping that to be the case.

This is what I was going to suggest too. Good luck!

  • Ok now I'm worried.

For about a week, Anna wasn't laughing as much as she was before, and was whining (sooo annoying!) .... But I think now she is starting to giggle more.  This does coincide with her learning to sit unsupported, so hopefully that was why... ??

  • I find teething has an impact on babbling too - when my dtr is getting new teeth, she pretty much stops babbling (still laughs, screams and whines though) mostly because she's too busy tongue-ing her new teeth spots I think.
