Queso....Yes or No?

My hubs and I are going out for Mexican food tonight and normally I immediatly order us a queso dip. I have heard queso is a no-no while pregnant. What are your thoughts!? I really love me some QUESO!

Re: Queso....Yes or No?

  • I haven't heard it's a no no.  And I would have a very hard time not ordering it!
So happy for my BFPB Steff13914 and her new twins! Welcome to the world sweet babies:) Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • You can have queso as long as it is from pasteurized milk.  Good luck asking that question at the restaurant though;)  From the Mayo Clinic:

    Avoid unpasteurized foods

Many low-fat dairy products ? such as skim milk, mozzarella cheese and cottage cheese ? can be a healthy part of your diet. Anything containing unpasteurized milk, however, is a no-no. These products could lead to foodborne illness.

Unless these soft cheeses are clearly labeled as being pasteurized or made with pasteurized milk, don't eat:

    • Brie
    • Feta
    • Camembert
    • Blue cheese
    • Mexican-style cheeses, such as queso blanco, queso fresco and panela

  • Oh wow... and now I really must have some.  Or tortilla soup.  Or both!  Yeah, I'm thinking both...

  • I've never heard of this. I ate queso throughout both my previous pregnancies.
  • i've never heard of a queso dip so i googled it. i don't see what would be bad in it for you that you should avoid it.

  • White queso is because generally the white cheese is in pasteurized. Regular queso that most restaurants serve is fine

  • It's queso fresco (the white crumbly soft cheese used in mexican food) that should be avoided, not queso dip!  I eat queso like 3 times a week.  It's all I have been craving this time around.

Exactly this!  The Queso Fresco cheese is a no no because it's not pasteurized!  So basically go nuts eating the queso dip at the restaurant your going to! Big Smile

  • I think you'd have to go to a super authentic Mexican restaurant to even get real queso cheese.  I'm a Mex junkie and have only been able to find it at one place.  Anything you'd get an an average restaurant is fine.

  • Well... a few weeks ago when we first found out we were pregnant, I googled it because my husband and I eat Mexican once a week it seems like.  I kept finding if it was pasteurized, it was fine.  So when we got there, I asked the server to show me the package (crazy I know) and he did.  It said pasteurized cheese.  To ease my mind I asked the doctor last week too.  He said most cheeses in America are fine to eat. Thank goodness :)
  • The queso dip you get at restaurants is fine.  Most restaurants steer clear of unpasteurized cheeses.

I am pretty sure in the US all dairy that is served in restaurants and typical grocery stores need to be pasteurized. If you get the soft cheeses from a specialty store, I would always ask.

"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."

Actually, you can get some of these soft, unpasteurized cheeses in my local grocery stores.  Check your labels.

  • Just so that you know at most Mexican restaurants they use plain old melted cheese in their queso dip. The type of Mexican cheese that is a no-no is REAL mexican cheese. It is a soft cheese and normally you don't find it at americanized Mexican restaurants.
