Babies: 9 - 12 Months

flonase for a 10 month old

So after doing allergy testing and discovering myis allergic to eggs, ragweed and mold...she was prescibed Zyrtec and Flonase. The Zyrtec is printed to be safe for babies over 6 months, but I can't find that information for flonase. I didn't think much of it, until I picked up a Rx for me today, and noticed the dose is the same, 50 mcg. I plan to call the pediatrician and allergist tomorrow, considering they both recommended it, but just wondering if anyone else's LOs have taken this or have heard of it being done?

Re: flonase for a 10 month old

  • LexiComp shows that nasal Flonase is not recommended for children under 4.

    Flonase?:

    Children <4 years: Not recommended

Children =4 years and Adolescents: Initial: 1 spray (50 mcg/spray) to each nostril daily (100 mcg/day); if response is inadequate, give 2 sprays to each nostril daily (200 mcg/day); once symptoms are controlled, reduce dose to 100 mcg/day (1 spray to each nostril daily); maximum dose: 200 mcg/day (4 sprays/day)

Adults: Initial: 200 mcg/day given as 2 sprays (50 mcg/spray) to each nostril daily or 1 spray to each nostril twice daily; dosage may be reduced to 100 mcg/day (1 spray to each nostril daily) after the first few days if symptoms are controlled; maximum dose: 200 mcg/day (4 sprays/day)

  • That's what I have been reading...I am getting pretty upset that two doctors have told me to give this to her.

  • Don't get upset. "Not recommended" and "Absolutely shouldn't be used at all" are two different things. Many, many medications are written for off label use or for children even when the drug maker doesn't publish the specifics. If this med was Rx'd by an allergist, it should be absolutely fine. Fluticasone is a very common and basic allergy med- your LO's doc most likely has Rx'd this for lots of kids and seen good results, otherwise he wouldn't be recommending it for LO.

It's not ethical to do drug testing on babies and pregnant women, so you will often see meds that are "not recommended" by the drug company for those populations. They can't recommend a drug for a group if that group has not been studied after taking that med... my guess is that Fluticasone falls into that category.
