Milk Allergy Question?

My son will be 1 next Saturday, we had an allergy test done the day before he turned 11 months. His pedi referred us because every time he ate cheese or yogurt he would break out in hives instantly. He had a scratch test done and it came back positive for dairy, eggs and peanuts. I BF and he suggested I cut out peanuts and limit my dairy and egg intake.

Two days ago I took him to the doctor for a different reason and his allergies came up. We didn't see his regular doctor. His allergies came up and this NP basically scolded me for actually taking him in to get tested saying that it is completely impossible for him to have allergies at this age and that any 11 mo old would test positive to those 3 things. I said if he isn't allergic why does he have a reaction to dairy products?! And he couldn't give me an answer. He told me to start introducing WCM (which I'm not, he isn't getting a milk product unless I'm not around to nurse him, then he gets coconut milk [Allergist ok'd this]) and that it will desensitize him. I am so lost and confused. It was a terrible appointment anyway and I left in tears so I didn't ask anymore questions.

Am I crazy for actually having him tested that young? Is it possible he really isn't allergic to those 3 things?

The allergist did tell me it was safe to feed him food that have eggs and milk cooked in it but that he can't have it straight (like cheese,  yogurt, scrambled eggs). Is it safe to make him a boxed cake for his party next weekend? I know its not really a question you can answer about someone else's kid but I'm not getting any guidance from the allergist or his ped (or the rest of that clinic). I'm just feeling very overwhelmed about all of this now and I'm so confused. Someone help me!

Re: Milk Allergy Question?

  • If you like your DS's regular pedi, request to never see that NP again and let the Dr know what he said.  He is 100% wrong.  My DD is allergic to eggs, dairy, and soy.  We found out b/c when I started giving her yogurt and cheese, she would get hives where it touched her skin.  I told her pedi at her 1 yr check up and she sent us to the allergist to have tests done.  They did a blood test called a RAST test and also a scratch test.  Both confirmed DD's allergies.

I was very overwhelmed at first too and felt like I didn't know what I could feed her.  I had a couple phone consults with a pediatric dietitian and she gave me lots of helpful ideas.  DD can handle eggs/dairy/soy in baked products, but she can't have them alone.  Like she can't have scrambled eggs or cow's milk, cheese, or yogurt.  She eats chicken, beef, turkey, beans, oatmeal, fruits, veggies, coconut yogurt...it's actually a very healthy way to eat instead of eating packaged foods.  I cook with olive oil instead of butter and she drinks enriched rice milk, water, and diluted juice.

I would ask for a referral to a pediatric dietitian to get guidance about his diet.  It can be a little difficult at first to make sure they're getting the protein and fat they need. Also, based on your DS's test results, did they prescribe an EpiPen Jr for you to have on hand?  I would ask about that, especially since he tested allergic to peanuts and peanut allergies can become severe very quickly.  DD is severely allergic to eggs and dairy, so they prescribed an EpiPen for us to always have on hand.  Thankfully, we've never had to use it.

For your DS's party, to be on the safe side, you could make a vegan cake and vegan icing.  Or make vegan muffins - DD loves vegan blueberry mufins (DH and I really like them too.  You wouldn't know they don't have milk or eggs in them).  Here's the recipe I use: https://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=11738.0 (I use canola oil instead of vegetable oil b/c vegetable oil is usually soybean oil).

  • I would think that the NP is dead wrong. I am sorry you had to go through that.

I tried DD on eggs for the first time right before her first birthday...she had a full blown anaphylactic shock reaction.

For her birthday, I made her a boxed mix cake and subbed eggs for one can of diet sprite. It was really good. I used the Wilton decorating icing recipe of Crisco, Powdered Sugar and Water.

  • That NP is dead wrong and gave you dangerous advice. I would call and ask to speak with your regular pedi and let them know what happened. If he/she shares the same opinion as the NP find a new pedi. I am so angry for you! You are doing a great job and keeping your LO safe.

As for the cake, I use the Food Allergy Mama cookbook for baking and love her birthday cake recipes. If you are going to use a boxed mix I would do a trial run before the big day to make sure your LO doesn't have a reaction on his big day.

    hugs to you!

  • Thank you all so much! We do have an Epi Pen Jr. I've put a formal complaint in with the hospital about this NP. They called me on Friday but I couldn't answer so I will be calling back on Monday and giving them an earful, I'm still fuming about this. We're on a military base and there isn't a Pediatric Allergist in our network so unfortunately I'm stuck with the one they gave me.
