I'm still too scared to give him one for the exact same reason (eta: because it happened to him, too, the choking). I do give him whole puffs finally.
Twin boys born too early at 17w4d and 18w2d in February 2010
Transabdominal cerclage placed September 2010
DS born at 35w1d in February 2011
Twin girls born at exactly 36w in February 2013
We started a few weeks ago, however we do watch closely for her biting off big pieces. I might do puffs soon.
This. DS has been ok with them but when they break off they can be pointy so we really watch him. He has had puffs for a while as well and does much better with them!

I am the opposite. I do mum mums but I am afraid of puffs and cheerios. My dd is 7 months. I am just starting to do half of a puff but I soak it in water or formula first to get it mushy.
DD held on to and ate a mum mum by herself for the first time a couple weeks ago. She mostly sucked on it then. Now she will bite a piece off but she chews it up.

Did he choke or just gag? Gagging's normal, it's how they learn how to take reasonably-sized bites and they'll spit out what they can't swallow. Choking is when they panic and can't breathe. It's possible your LO isn't ready for Mum Mums, but I think the youngest I've heard of for them is about 6-7 months.
We started a few weeks ago when he was 5 1/2 months. At first he did gag some, but it wasn't really choking. He drank from is sippy cup to help a little after that. They dissolve really, really quickly. Now he eats them so fast! I was in a meeting the other day and had him with. To distract him I gave him both of the Mums Mums in the package and they were just gone. It's a little incredible to watch him with it.
