Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Does wind take a babies breath away...?

I've heard it said by multiple people.  My LO (even now at almost 4 months) definitely has a hard time breathing in the wind.  I try to keep his carrier turned away and the canopy closed, but sometimes that isn't enough.

Even this morning walking from the car to the babysitter's door, he gasped when the wind was blowing and his eyes got real big (like he was startled).

I mentioned this friends and they had never experienced this or heard of it.  Anyone else's LO do this?  I feel horrible when it happens.

  • Yeah, that happens to DS. I think its funny and so does he. I blow in his face a little and his eyes get all big and then he flashes a HUGE smile :)

  • It can startle them. Sometimes when DD1 was (or is!) crying and can't stop long enough to catch her breath we'll gently blow on her face. It startles her into gasping and then she takes a big breath. I would bet the wind would have a similar effect.

  • So LO can breathe even though this happens?  I have reluctant to go out in any wind, because it?s hard to keep him completely covered.  Even with 2 canopies on the stroller, there always seem to be gaps that cause him to gasp.

ETA:  Sorry for the silly FTM question.  Surprise

  • He'll breathe through it. It startles DS and he closes his eyes and throws his hands up, but he's never passed out because of lack of oxygen.

  • I just remembered that when I went to go get my oldest from the bus stop last week, I took LO with me and it was pretty windy. I was carrying him and trying to shield him from the wind. However, instead of trying to get away from the wind, he wanted to be in it! He kept pulling away from my shoulder and sitting up straight so that the wind was in his face. He gasped a lot but he liked it and acted really interested in it. It certainly was not hurting him.
  • My aunt, who is a nurse, said something about this last time I saw her. She did say to keep them covered in the wind, it can cause ear infections.
