Trying for #2 and EBF

Hi ladies!  DH and I are currently TTC #2.....as much as we can, since I haven't had a return of AF yet.  I've been having a lot of possible ovulation symptoms the last couple months, but have yet to see anything!  I've even POAS a few....ok several times and all BFNs.  DD is 7 1/2 months old and I am still EBF (she takes solids too but still takes about 24oz of breastmilk a day).  I know everyone is completely different but I'm curious as to when you all got KU with #2.  Were you still EBF if you did BF?  Did you have a return of AF before you got KU or did it happen before you even saw AF again?  Did anyone have to stop BF to get a return of AF?  I really hope I can join you ladies with 2 u 2 soon!  Thanks for your info!

Re: Trying for #2 and EBF

  • I got AF back while I was still EBF. I had my first PP AF at about 6ish months, my second about 50 days after that and then got my BFP. I BF until DS was a year old and then stopped as it got too much for me. But I know a lot of ladies continue to BF right through their PG.

  • I got pregnant with #2 and #3 while BFing. DD was 6.5 months when I got pregnant with DS and DS was 7.5 months pregnant when I got pregnant with #3. AF never returned (both times), so I haven't had a period since August 2008, which I'm not complaining about!! Good luck!

  • I'm trying for #2 also. I EBF until 11 months and haven't had AF yet (I POAS once a week though!). I'm hoping to get pregnant before getting AF back but you might not get pregnant until you finish BFing. Have fun trying though! :) Good luck.

  • i had to stop bfing to get pregnant again.
  • I'm still EBF and haven't had AF return.  My LO is one.  I quit pumping at 11 months and nothing yet.  LO still nurses all night long (we bedshare) so we're going to try nightweaning starting this weekend.  If that doesn't jump start O for me I'll have to completely wean :( I have a feeling that I may be one of those who have to wean to get KU.

  • I got AF when DS was 6 months old, right around when we started solids and he loved them from day one. my cycles were a little wacky, but I got 4 of them before I got pregnant with DD. He was 10 months when I got my BFP. We were TTC but go pg very fast and werent actively trying by charting etc. I BF until he was 13 months and I was 18 wks pregnant, it was VERY hard since I was so sick, but it was worth it.

I know many people who didnt get their periods til their kids were a year or more while nursing. Basically when they dropped a feeding or so they got AF. But you may not have to do that. As your LO gets more info finger food and food in general you may get AF since she drops a feeding on her own, or nurses less for a feeding. They usually eat a lot more solids around 9 months or so.

    Good luck!

  • I got my first period when DD was about 5 months.  I got KU on my second cycle.  I think part of the reason I got it back sooner was because we did not get off to a good start due to her being in the NICU for the first week.  Who knows though.  It is different for each person.  Just have fun and it'll happen when it happens.

  • Most likely you'll need at least one AF before you can really TTC.  I think it's tougher since you're still BFing a lot.

AF returned for me when DD was around 8 months old, but my cycles were all over the place (some as far as 46 days part).  We just got lucky and got KU shortly after DD's 1st birthday.

I don't think you'll have to stop BFing to get a BFP.  I was still BFing DD 3 times per day when I got KU.  I will be weaning in a couple weeks though.

  • Although I was still EBF (LO was sleeping through the night at the time) I got AF back at 12 weeks!!  My DD just turned one when I conceived.  Maybe the night weaning will help??  Good luck!!
  • I was EBF when I became pg with this baby.  DS2 was about 10 mo old when I got a BFP.  I did have AF, not sure how many times (we weren't charting yet just not TTA).  AF was still pretty irregular but I was having fertility signs and next thing I knew we had a bfp.  GL!

  • I was still EBF when I got my first PP AF ... it was just over 9 months after having her.

We conceived on our third cycle and I actually stopped BF that month.

  • Wow!  Thank all you ladies SO mcuh for all your input and personal experiences.  This is exactly what I was looking for :).  DD seems to be drinking less milk every week.  Just today, while my MIL watched her for 12 hours while DH and I were at work, she only drank 11oz.  Ate lots of solids though.  A couple weeks ago she started sleeping through the night, then went through a week where she was waking up (she had a tooth cutting through) and is now back to sleeping through the night.  Hopefully this will jump start ovulation if it hasn't already!

  • I had to wean to get AF back.  I waited until LO was 9 months and 3 weeks after weaning I got AF back.  Got a BFP after my first period.

  • I was EBF but still got AF at 2 months PP. A few cycles later, I got pregnant (DD1 was 6 months old). With DD2, I got AF back at just 5 weeks PP even though I EBF. I think my body just wants me to keep making babies.

  • I weaned completely at 6 months and first AF arrived about a month later. We were pregnant on the first cycle after that. I'm guessing AF only returned because I completely weaned, but it could have been a coincidence.

FWIW, I was not exclusively bfing the whole time, although I would usually be nursing or pumping every 2-3 hours day and night (he would eat 3-4 time during the night), save for maybe one bottle in there somewhere. This went on until 4-5 months in when I started cutting back one feeding a day every 1-2 weeks. Meaning for at least 1-2 months of the time I was nursing, I was missing feedings all over the place and I still didn't get AF until a month after I weaned completely.
