18 month old sleep regression

J is having a hard time going to sleep. Like SCREAMING not wanting to go into his crib and in the last week or two has woken up almost every night crying for an hour................. I figured it was a nightmare in middle of the night but to just go to bed at night ??

Any thoughts or anyone else going through this ?

Re: 18 month old sleep regression

  • I thought this was just us and that his teeth that are coming in are bothering him more at night, even with medicine and stuff. Also having a REALLY hard time getting him to fall back asleep after he wakes up screaming. We are talking over an hour or more after he has calmed down to get him back to sleep. I haven't heard of any big sleep regression at this age, but I have noticed a big change in skills the last few weeks too, big vocabulary jump and a few new motor skills, so maybe that's it. Any big developmental jumps in the last few weeks? Or maybe its about to start if it hasn't yet.

  • Two words:  crib tent.  Hmm

J/K, but since we got it our issues are solved.  No words for poor old Jasp, but that sucks, big hugs my dear.

  • Been there X 2.  I do agree with Friks on the tent, went that route with one and not the other and whooo boy are there differences.  I have got to sleep but I'll flesh out a real reply in the morning.
  • Yes!  The last 2 weeks have been awful!  E used to go to bed with no problems (he's still in his crib) and now he screams and cries at bed time.  And about every other night he wakes up around 3am screaming.  When I try to get him to go back to sleep, he just lays there with his eyes wide open and screams if I leave the room.  I brought him to bed with us once, and DH looked at him an hour later and he was just laying there, wide eyed.

I have no idea what's going on.  I don't think he's teething his 2 yr molars yet...but he did have a cold which might be part of it. Otherwise everything is exactly the same here and I hope he goes back to being the good sleeper that I know he is!

  • So, you mean H wasn't the only one screaming his head off at three this morning? He is going down fairly easily, although he only wants DH these days, but the middle of the night...SCREAMING MAMAMAMAMAMAMAMAMAMA. Ahem, I'm tired. We've tried letting him come to bed with us. We've tried rubbing his back and getting him to fall back asleep in his crib. We've tried CIO in the middle of the night. Nothing seems to break it or make it easier. It sucks. I hope this phase passes quickly for both J and H.

  • There is a sleep regression at 18 months in many kids.  DS has never been a great sleeper but it got worse at 18 months.  He had trouble falling asleep (which was not his issue prior to that), and when he woke at night, he had trouble falling back asleep and would lie awake for hours on end, in the dark, not crying but wanting company.  It sucked hard core.  But it did get better eventually.  We started trying to get him to nap less and that seemed to help for a while.
  • Sounds like the same thing we went through with our daughter. From what I've read there is a sleep regression at 18 months. Sure enough our daughter was practically 18 months on the nose and she started waking up 5 or 6 times a night, either starving or just for the sake of crying.

The good news is that it usually goes away after a couple weeks. I came across this site that I'll link below. It had a couple decent ideas that seemed to help a bit. If anything it'll give you an idea on what causes a sleep regression. Knowledge is power is what they say, right? lol
