Re: A Bathing Poll
As I was sitting around watching my children splash and play interminably last night, I was pondering the bath....
1. Frequency - Daily. I know he doesn't need a bath every day, but it's part of our evening routine and he enjoys it.
2. Bubbles - DH usually gives M his bath, and DH hates bubbles, so he never uses them. When I do baths, I almost always use tons of bubbles.
3. Duration - an even split between business and pleasure
4. Product - We use Aveeno products
5. Accessories - We have a large toy boat, several squirting ducks, a swimming seal, and some cups. M also loves to play with the shampoo bottles.
6. Location, Location Location - Tub
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. n/a
8. Tricks of the Trade - I try to wash him while he's too busy playing to notice that I'm actually trying to get him clean.
1. Frequency - Every other day in the fall, winter and spring, although sometimes we go to a third day if evening plans get in the way. In the summer, closer to daily to get off sunscreen and bug spray.
2. Bubbles - A cap full for each bath. DD adds it.
3. Duration - Both now love the bath so much, DS dances when he sees me start it, that I let them play in there for about 20-30 minutes.
4. Product - Johnson's Bubbles and shampoo for DS, KanDoo Shampoo for DD and leave in conditioner by Johnson's for DD as well.
5. Accessories - Boats, Cups, Crayons, Squirters, rubber duckies, foam letters, suction cup fish, sieves - whats not in there.... Storing it is kind of haphazard, I need to come up with a better solution. Right now it's in Tupperware on the floor. DS loves playing with the bath toys while I am using the bathroom or showering so I leave it at his level.
6. Location, Location Location - Tub, I miss the sink, but truthfully evening baths in the sink were a hassle - I would have to be cleaned up from dinner before bath time and that rarely happens.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. Social affair, they bathe well together. And I don't have the time or sanity to manage two separate ones. (See the duration answer)
8. Tricks of the Trade - Lately we've been making it rain on her head, which she thinks is funny, but it will only work once or twice more till we are back to not wanting to rinse. I do a lot of squeezing a wet wash cloth on the length and back of her hair, but we fight over the top and front....This is timely! I was wondering what most people do.
1. Frequency - Daily, though sometimes we skip if the need arises, or we are short on time.
2. Bubbles - Usually only for special occasions, and a good middle ground (I think 2 capfuls?)
3. Duration - An even split between business and pleasure
4. Product - Dove soap, Suave shampoo/conditioner for kids (it smells like coconut!)
5. Accessories - A doll that can go in the tub, a loofah (DD loves it!), rubber duckie and other similar animals, bath books. I usually ask her what she wants, and it varies by the day. Sometimes she's happy just playing with the cup I use to wet her hair!
6. Location, Location Location - Tub. I tried to use the removable shower handle on her head once and she burst into tears as soon as she saw it.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. N/A at this point. I imagine when #2 is old enough, we'll bathe them together, though I have very specific memories of DD peeing in the tub (which she probably still does). I'm not sure I want DD #1 sitting in the pee water of #2.
8. Tricks of the Trade - None, really, other than I learned the hard way that DD hates the shower head! She actually likes to stick her head under the tub faucet, though, which makes rinsing the shampoo out much easier!
3. Duration - Even split. DD#2's is usually shorter just because sometimes she gets fussy.
4. Product - Johnson and Johnson for the baby. Some sort of Dora body wash for the older one. Suave hair products.
5. Accessories - Boats, Cups, and squirters.
6. Location, Location Location - Tub.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair.
Social. They are already starting to interact so it's fun for them to do it together. Plus, it allows one parent to do bath time and the other to do dishes.
8. Tricks of the Trade - I cannot get DD#1 to put her head back so I pretty much just try not to get it in her eyes but sometimes I do and I say "whoopsie. you're okay". I actually think it's somewhat good that she gets used to water on her face for when she starts swimming. So, I just try not to make a big deal of it.
1. frequency: usually every-other-day unless he's gotten very dirty or needs to relax a little at night.
2. no bubbles. he takes a bath in his little tub while my husband or i am showering (we bathe him first & then he plays while we're bathing ourselves). it keeps the water warmer longer & he likes water comes from the shower head.
3. we're efficient about his bathing, but he can splash & play while we shower and then while we're drying ourselves, changing into our PJs etc.
4. product: we're still working on gifts from when he was born. we've used burt's bees, something that began with an "e" and are now on some stuff with peter rabbit on it (I think it was from WF?).
5. he has a little boat & some squeeze toys.
6. shower/tub
7. n/a
8. as i said above, sprout likes water falling on him, so he doesn't really mind the rinsing the hair.
Not sure if this would work for you, but you know those reusuable produce bags? They're mesh & a drawstring. I use one for all his toys & hang it at one end of the shower.
1. Frequency - Daily, Every other day, weekly?
Usually daily because DD loves the bath/shower
2. Bubbles - Mountains, mole hills, or crystal clear waters?
lots of bubbles
3. Duration - Quick and efficient dunk, an even split between business and pleasure, or an evening long escapade of splashing debauchery.
it is usually 20 minutes. Part necessity, part fun.
4. Product - Every day Johnson's or luxe for the little ones locks.
Aveeno. I like the way it smells :-)
5. Accessories - Boats, Cups, Crayons, Squirters - What's in your tub?
We have cups, squirters, a plastic Ketchup bottle, sponges and wind up toys.
6. Location, Location Location - Tub, Kitchen sink, Shower, Hose in the front yard?
Tub. we have a kids shower attachment that looks like a fish and it is a perfect height for her. She gets to choose if she wants a shower or bath. Lately, the shower wins.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair.
n/a
8. Tricks of the Trade
She has to be the one to put the soap in her hair or it is a scream-a-thon. She loves sticking her head into the shower stream so even if she chooses bath- we turn on the shower to wash her hair.
1. Frequency - Daily, Every other day, weekly? Every other night.
2. Bubbles - Mountains, mole hills, or crystal clear waters? I don't add / make bubbles, but DH squirts body wash right into the bath water.
3. Duration - Quick and efficient dunk, an even split between business and pleasure, or an evening long escapade of splashing debauchery. Depends on their moods and my tiredness level. Usually all business to get clean, then a few minutes of playtime.
4. Product - Every day Johnson's or luxe for the little ones locks. J&J shampoo, a kid-friendly conditioner for DD, and prescription mild body wash for both (thanks to DS's sensitive skin).
5. Accessories - Boats, Cups, Crayons, Squirters - What's in your tub? We had a rack of toys for DD (she especially loved the crayons), but it gets too crowded and crazy now with two active kids in there. Maybe a truck or cup or something if I'm feeling generous. And I've banned squirty things...they just trap water and get mildew-y.
6. Location, Location Location - Tub, Kitchen sink, Shower, Hose in the front yard? Tub in the bathroom they share.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. Bathed at the same time...no energy to do them separately! Not looking forward to having a baby who needs a separate bathtime experience for a while.
8. Tricks of the Trade - or how do you get your child to rinse their hair without running to the other side of the tub, screaming bloody murder or perpetually proclaiming that she will do it while dumping water everywhere but on her head... DD used to be REALLY bad about this. The snap-on visors were really helpful (because she hated getting it in her eyes and ears), as was having a special song we sang during hair rinsing (like "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" for some reason). She sang along and knew that when it was over, the water boarding would be done, too...forced me to work fast! We have one of the hose attachment things that makes life much easier. She still has "off" nights but is much better - I no longer end up fully clothed in the bathtub out of frustration, wrestling her so she doesn't slip and break a bone in her attempts to evade the nozzle!
1. Frequency - Every other day. We sometimes let him sit it in the tub and get him wet (no shampoo/soap) in between baths if he's really sweaty or messy.
2. Bubbles - Mole hills. Nesties suggested bubbles as a way to get him over a bath-fear phase and we stuck with it because he loves them.
3. Duration - Usually a mix. I try to get him all soaped and rinsed pretty quickly and then let him splash around for a bit, maybe 10-15 minutes total? But if he's making too much of a mess I will yank him out.
4. Product - Burt's Bees shampoo/body wash. I loooove the smell and it's all natural.
5. Accessories - A cup for rinsing/playing and sometimes a boat. We tried some Crayola bath foam last night and he thought it was fun until it got in his eyes.
6. Location, Location Location - Tub. Kitchen sink only lasted for a few weeks until he moved into the little baby tub with hammock.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. N/A
8. Tricks of the Trade - Uhhh . . . no real tips. The bubbles are a good distraction, as is letting him play with his own cup. I just try to cup my hand over his forehead and rinse off as quick as I can (I think DH just dumps it over his head, which leaves J spluttering and somehow he still has soap in his hair).TTC #2: BFP 12/17/11, m/c 1/7/12 and D&C 1/12/12
baby blog/cooking blog

7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. Generally a solitary affair. If DH is OOT, I double up.8. Tricks of the Trade - or how do you get your child to rinse their hair without running to the other side of the tub, screaming bloody murder or perpetually proclaiming that she will do it while dumping water everywhere but on her head... Right now, I rinse DD's hair under the faucet. She momentarily cries and then sticks her thumb in her mouth. I'm hoping if I keep it up she'll get used to it and not fight? (Ha!) DS freaks out about water on his face, so we pour water over his head with the bottle and dry his face in between pours. (DH started the face drying thing. It kind of annoys me b/c I had DS waiting until the end before drying his face, but oh well. I don't do his bath most of the time)
1. Frequency - Daily, Every other day, weekly? daily
2. Bubbles - Mountains, mole hills, or crystal clear waters? usually crystal clear, on occasion mole hills
3. Duration - Quick and efficient dunk, an even split between business and pleasure, or an evening long escapade of splashing debauchery. even split between business and pleasure
4. Product - Every day Johnson's or luxe for the little ones locks. California Baby
5. Accessories - Boats, Cups, Crayons, Squirters - What's in your tub? a plastic cup for rinsing/playing, a few squirters
6. Location, Location Location - Tub, Kitchen sink, Shower, Hose in the front yard? tub
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. n/a
8. Tricks of the Trade - or how do you get your child to rinse their hair without running to the other side of the tub, screaming bloody murder or perpetually proclaiming that she will do it while dumping water everywhere but on her head... trying to find a good way to do this too. I usually try to rinse as quickly as possible because the water goes everywhere. DD refuses to sit still most times, so the water gets all over the place. Sometimes she'll look up/lean back, but it's rare.7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair.no other kiddos but our 100lbs lab likes to be nearby and likes to be splashed 8. Tricks of the Trade - or how do you get your child to rinse their hair without running to the other side of the tub, screaming bloody murder or perpetually proclaiming that she will do it while dumping water everywhere but on her head... we just count to 3 and do it!!
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair.8. Tricks of the Trade - or how do you get your child to rinse their hair without running to the other side of the tub, screaming bloody murder or perpetually proclaiming that she will do it while dumping water everywhere but on her head... DS never seemed to care too much about water being dumped over his head. I usually tilt his chin back a bit.
1. Frequency - Daily, Every other day, weekly?
Usually daily, but some days we just forgo it.
2. Bubbles - Mountains, mole hills, or crystal clear waters?
Sometimes a little bubbles, but more often than not clear water
3. Duration - Quick and efficient dunk, an even split between business and pleasure, or an evening long escapade of splashing debauchery.
Seriously depend on her mood; we always start by washing so if it's not a play in the tub kind of day, she can jump right out.
4. Product - Every day Johnson's or luxe for the little ones locks.
J&J body wash and we just started with the shampoo. I think we have a 5 year supply from what we received for shower presents.
5. Accessories - Boats, Cups, Crayons, Squirters - What's in your tub?
bubble books, squirter toys, three boats, and several ducks
6. Location, Location Location - Tub, Kitchen sink, Shower, Hose in the front yard?
tub; although we are currently using the sink while our bathroomis being renovated
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair.
NA
8. Tricks of the Trade - or how do you get your child to rinse their hair without running to the other side of the tub, screaming bloody murder or perpetually proclaiming that she will do it while dumping water everywhere but on her head...
we have a Belle washcloth and a boat that pours water, so for us "Belle/Boat is getting you wet!" and a towel handy to always pat eyes dry right away.
. Frequency - 2x per week
2. Bubbles - We switch it up
3. Duration - As long as we both are enjoying it
4. Product - Aveeno Oatmeal Soap or Burt's Bees,
5. Accessories - Random things--peri bottle and snot sucker from the hospital, a natural bristle brush, a cup, an hourglass shower timer.
6. Location, Location Location - LO sits n the tub floor while I shower and plays. Over the course of my shower, I alternate letting the water go down the drain and putting in the plug so it builds up to splash levels. That keeps it exciting. We end with all clean water in the tub (perhaps with bubble) and then I plunk down in the water with LO and clean him, then we drain it all and both end with a final rinse down. We've been through a variety of bath options and that one is the least taxing on my back and is fun.
7. For those with more than one child, is bathing a social or solitary affair. N/A
8. Tricks of the Trade - I use the snot sucker bulb (no longer used for that) and we play "elephant" to rinse off. I suck up water and then squirt LO with it soft and then hard enough it makes him giggle and tell him it is like a little elephant trunk. I tap the part of his body that is going to get squired next before I do it, so he is prepared. I will add that LO has been in the shower with us since his cord fell off, so I think he is pretty used to splahes on him. (Early on, DH or I would wear him in a water sling, as he got older, we put him in his baby tub in the big tub while we showered. )

Snagging this idea!
More Green For Less Green
Dear Jell
1. Mostly every other. The older is obsessssssed with bathing with the younger now, though.
2. Periodically. I tend to be a quick and efficient girl, and bubbles prolong the experience.
3. My husband is usually the 'fun' bather. I am usually...not. Just depends on the night!
4. My girl friend introduced me to Mustela. It's expensive but I adore it. I actually never liked "that baby smell," and I finally realized that it is the J&J that I don't like. That sealed the deal for me, with Mustela. Plus, my youngest seemed to have a reaction to J&J (well, Target version) when she was really little. That seems to have cleared up now.
5. Ducks and these foam farm/jungle scene things that stick to the tile.
6. Tub
7. She still dislikes it, but she covers her eyes with a washcloth when I do it. Husband also taught her to "look at the moon" (in adult words, "look up"), and that seems to help.
Bath laughs,
