I love this name for a boy, but I've seen multiple references to little girls named James lately. Since Avery is already used by more girls than boys now, does the name James Avery say girl or boy to you?

I think of them both as boy names.  Even though my niece is named Avery, I still think of it as a boy name...

James is all boy to me, not even close to neutral. Avery could go either way, but James Avery I would assume is a boy.

I know they started in TX (where I live) and I think EVERYONE owned a piece of James Avery jewelry!  Looks like they are basically TX / OK and the South.  But if OP lives up North, might not be a big deal at all!

I was going to say the same thing, but I figured it was only a Texas thing. It wouldn't stop me from using the name if I lived elsewhere.

Wow, I didn't know there was a jewelry store by the name of James Avery in Texas. Even though I'm from Wisconsin, both my husband and I have quite a few relatives that have moved to Texas, so it's definitely something to consider. Thanks!

That's James Pickens. James Avery is the dad on Fresh Prince. I've been thinking about Uncle Phil this whole time!

It sounds all boy.

I know people try to make it unisex, but James will only ever be a boy name to me. Avery does strike me as a bit more feminine, but I think it works well as a middle name for a boy. (I just don't particularly like it for a first name.)

Definitely all boy.  I don't think James will ever make the jump to being primarily a girls name.  Avery might.

Thanks for all the input! I hadn't heard of the actor James Avery before (I've seen him in Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but I wouldn't have known his name). I'm going to look like a dork here, but that actor actually played a Klingon in a few episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, a fact which delights the Trekkie in me.

If Avery was a first name I would assume girl, but I guess it can be either.
