Baby Names

What do you think of Jonathan and corresponding nicknames?

Jonathan was our other choice for DS when he was born and I've since felt that it's a little on the long side for my liking.  However, I think I still might like it more than other names.  I met someone whose name is Jon today (assuming it's short for Jonathan b/c of the spelling) and his friend referred to him as Johnny, which I kind of liked, even though I usually haven't cared for that nickname.  How would you spell this nickname if the name is Jonathan, not John?  Jonnie?  That looks weird to me.  Johnny doesn't really make sense either though because there usually isn't an H in Jonathan.

  • I like Jonathan, but not Jon or Johnny.  Although, I'm sure it would end up shortened anyway.  If you like Johnny, you could just name the boy Johnny, particularly if Jonathan seems too long.

  • Johnny is fine. NNs spellings don't always have to make sense. It's better that the spelling doesn't match the full name than to use a bizarre spelling that no one will get right.
  • One of my best friends growing up was Jonathan nn Jonny. I like it like that. There's no need for an H if there isn't one in the original name.

  • I guess I like Jon or John more than Johnnie because it can grow with you a little more easily...but I also know 4 Jonathans who go by their full names, no nickname at all, so that's certainly an OK thing, too.  It's a great classic name:)

  • DS2 is Jonathan. We call him JoJo and eventually I hope that people may call him Jo rather then Jon as people naturally like to abbreviate names.

I personally do not want people to abbreviate his name to John, so I figured that I better direct them now before it happens.

You could do Nathan too.  Also you can give him a T or D middle name and you can call him JT/JD or something similar.

  • I've seen it spelled Johnanthan too, if the Jonny spelling bugs you. But like a pp said, the nick name spelling doesn't have to match the full name spelling.

I also like the idea of a middle name starting with a letter that would sound good shortened; I've known a JH, a JR, and a JT.

    Good luck!

  • DH is Jonathan and goes by Jon.  I don't like Johnny at all, and I dont' like other spellings of Jonathan.  I think Johnathan looks weird.

  • I had a student name Johnny who rocked that name! It's still NMS but I do really, really like it now. He was just Johnny, no Jonathan (but I think you could use those two spellings. Like pp said nicknames don't need to be spelled just like first names.)

  • My nephew's name is Johnathan (yes, spelled that way.) My BIL's full name is John Nathan (goes by Nathan), so they combined the two to make his name. You could spell it that way (even though I usually hate different spellings.)  His nn for the family is John-John, but he is still little, and I am sure we won't call him that forever.  Otherwise, people call him Johnathan.

  • I think Jonathan is a timeless classic.  As for nicknames, I don't see why you couldn't go with whichever you liked best.  My brother's name is Jonathan but he goes by Fletcher - his middle name.  My parents wanted to use a 'weird' name but wanted to give him the option to go by John or whatever as an adult.  He's 26 and still uses Fletcher.

  • DH is Jonathan, nn Jonny. Everyone knows him as Jonny. FWIW I've always thought "Johnny" looks weird, I much prefer Jonny.

  • I like that this name is classic, but I feel like it is the most overused name in the entire world! I went to a wedding last year where the groom and 3 out of 4 groomsmen were named John or Jonathan. And there are soooo many historical figures with this name, too. But I guess that's a good thing?
