Jonathan was our other choice for DS when he was born and I've since felt that it's a little on the long side for my liking. However, I think I still might like it more than other names. I met someone whose name is Jon today (assuming it's short for Jonathan b/c of the spelling) and his friend referred to him as Johnny, which I kind of liked, even though I usually haven't cared for that nickname. How would you spell this nickname if the name is Jonathan, not John? Jonnie? That looks weird to me. Johnny doesn't really make sense either though because there usually isn't an H in Jonathan.

Re: What do you think of Jonathan and corresponding nicknames?
DS2 is Jonathan. We call him JoJo and eventually I hope that people may call him Jo rather then Jon as people naturally like to abbreviate names.
I personally do not want people to abbreviate his name to John, so I figured that I better direct them now before it happens.
You could do Nathan too. Also you can give him a T or D middle name and you can call him JT/JD or something similar.

I've seen it spelled Johnanthan too, if the Jonny spelling bugs you. But like a pp said, the nick name spelling doesn't have to match the full name spelling.
I also like the idea of a middle name starting with a letter that would sound good shortened; I've known a JH, a JR, and a JT.
Good luck!
