Was that a night terror?

Anyone have any experience with them? B went down around 9pm sound asleep. She woke up SCREAMING, so hard she started gagging. When I got upstairs to grab her (less than a minute after she started crying), she was shaking so hard and literally climbed right up me. It took me over 45 min to calm her down. She is usually a good sleeper unless she is sick. But even when she had croup, she didn't scream like that. Usually whined and fussed but no screaming. I had to leave the room with her and take her downstairs before she even came close to starting to calm down.

So we are thinking night terror? She was absolutely fine this morning and slept the rest of the night after she finally fell back asleep last night. Oh my, it literally put me and DH's anxiety level right through the roof. We thought maybe she'd been bitten by something or hurt something, nope. She never indicated that anything was bothering her physically. Thoughts anyone?

Re: Was that a night terror?

  • It doesn't sound like a night terror, and she isn't the right age for them either.  Sounds like a very bad dream.  A night terror generally happens around preschool age, and no matter what you do, you cannot calm them down.  Then, suddenly, they snap out of it and remember absolutely nothing of the entire episode.  I used to think Tyler was having them as a baby, but he wasn't.

  • I wouldn't say night terror, either. Typically, they don't wake up while they're experiencing a night terror, and they don't start happening until the child is around 2 1/2.
