Re: ??? Weekly Check-in ??? 10/10/2011

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?~17mo, ~16.5wks pg
    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?Mmmm, I'm vomiting less often so that's better. Still very nauseous and dizzy, can only hold down very limited type of food (rice) and specific juice for fluids. But I think I'm finally off IVs for good (hopefully) now! YAY!
    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?The big u/s in a couple of weeks (we'll be finding out the gender).
    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?Same as #2.
    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites?Amazon.com (online), Target (online), BuyBuyBaby (in person)
    (6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn?Breast pump, lanolin, diapers/wipes, onesies/swaddling blanket, and I wish I had a nursing pillow from the start but ended up getting one after my wrists were killing me.
    (7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that?Usually they're nice/friendly about it. I smile and be nice, then whip out my antibacterial wipes and wipe LO down ASAP. It didn't happen very much when he was really young because he was usually in the Ergo and people were generally not rude enough to reach into the Ergo to touch him.
    (8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc?Ergo @ airport, Ergo (napping) on plane (brought 2 fav toys for when/if he wakes up)--federal regulations req you to undo your baby carrier while taking off/landing but sometimes they don't make you do it if they don't notice =P also, we never went on a flight longer than 1-2hrs with LO so I don't have any tips for longer flights. I don't have good tips on sleeping because we almost always ended up cosleeping but it may not work for any more trips in the future.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 17.5 months.
    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? I don't think anything actually qualifies as a milestone - they're just getting better and better at the stuff they do. Their vocabularies are starting to take off now, which is a relief (twins are often developmentally behind with this, so it's good that my guys aren't TOO far behind). Lately they've been really into making animal noises - especially lion and hippo noises when they see those pictures in their books lol.
    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Still need to make that 18 month appointment...
    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? My patience. They're good kids, and aren't doing anything outside of the usual boundary pushing. But with two of them doing it, I don't get a break and I can often feel my patience about to snap. I think I need to find some extra coping mechanisms.
    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites? Umm...hmm. Online shopping in Australia sucks, so I do most of my shopping in stores. I guess eBay and Amazon?(6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn? I can only pick one?! LOL I'm calling it a 3-way tie between swaddling blankets, pacifiers, and white noise mp3s. Stick out tongue
    (7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that? I get stopped a lot (you'd think twins were a carnival sideshow attraction), and surprisingly very few people try to touch the boys. I always step around to the front of the stroller, next to/slightly in front of the person who is checking out my kids, so maybe they pick up on my body language?
    (8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc? N/A - we've never traveled with them.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?23 months tomorrow!
    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?pretty crummy.  I haven't been online much b/c i've been so sick and busy.  last week I was on vacation but worked Wed/thurs/Fri/Sat up until the last minute....literally left work on Sat and came home and then went straight to the airport! it was not very conducive to getting well and i wasn't able to enjoy our vacation as much as I would have liked.  still, we had a good time. she had a blast at the beach and at the pool.  I'm currently taking a z-pack for what we believe might be "walking pneumonia" - I am starting to feel better but still feel pretty crummy :(lil A did great on the flights. it's much easier to keep her entertained now that she is into pretend play.  she spent about an hour of our flight back pretending to cook things and feed them to us using a small plastic tray and a small bottle of hand sanitizer LOL she was a real trooper and didn't cry at all on either of our flights. she also stayed dry during both flights which was awesome (we did use the toilet on the plane, i just held her so that she could hover over the toilet and pee!)
    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?she'll go to the pedi next month for her big 2 yr apptwe're going to CA at the end of the month to celebrate Halloween and to throw her an early 2nd birthday party while we are there :)other exciting stuff - I think we might start TTC again soon.  I still have a beef with DH about being more involved but I feel like I shouldn't punish A just b/c her daddy isn't more involved w/her....plus he said I could hire the sitter more (even on days i am at home and not at work) to help me with the 2, so I feel more ok about handling the increased work load. we'll probably start trying in December
    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?taking of LO, being sick, and working oh and the tantrums. she is still having them.  last week she got so upset she was hitting herself and even bruised her leg :(  Lori posted a nice link on FB though that I've found helpful, if nothing else just to help me mentally deal w/them
    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites?amazon, diapers.com, babycheapskate (for deals)
    (6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn?nursing pillow, nursing pads, lansinoh lanolin ointment, swaddling blanket
    (7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that?I don't like it but I don't freak out about it either.  most people are good about not doing it and when they do, they touch her shoulder or something. i think when they are itty bitty ppl have more of a tendency to want to touch their hands or faces
    (8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc?use a baby carrierbring a change of clothes for baby AND for youbring snacksuse babylegs to make changing diapers easierbring 1 toy and 1 bookbring a blanket or lovey or one familiar object to put in travel cribdon't forget to pack a night light if your LO is used to having one at home
  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 14.5 months
    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Henry figure out how to go DOWN stairs this week!  He's been going up for a while now, but never down  He still needs tons of help to get started, but he's figuring it out!(3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? In a few weeks.
    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Honestly, it has more to do with me than him.  He getting to this point where he doesn't seem to want me much.  He wants to play independently, and and doesn't even want to snuggle more than a minute when it's bedtime.  I guess I should be happy, but it make me sad and worried.  Does he not feel attached to me?  Is it because he's spending d much time at daycare?  I know he loves me, but he doesn't seem to need me much.
    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites? Amazon mostly.  Babysteals.com, and diaperjunction.com sometimes.(6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn? My Brest Friend, good swaddling blankets (Miracle Blankets), and a co-sleeper attached to the bed.
    (7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that? I honestly don't get a lot of people wanting to touch him.  Like redshoe, maybe it's my body language?
    (8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc? We've never flown with him, but we do dive 5-6 hours every few months.  For driving I say leave at/close to their bedtime.  He sleeps the whole way and it's a breeze.  :)

First - I know exactly what you're talking about. I used to get a little exasperated because my guys wanted to be in my lap all.the.time, and now they just want to go go go! And I'm left feeling like, "Hey! What about cuddle time?!"

Second - it has NOTHING to do with how attached he feels to you. I know that as mamas, this sudden independence seems like it's about us (why doesn't my LO want me to hug him any more?) but it's not. It's about the awesome, healthy, energetic, curious toddlers we have. I promise that Henry loves you and wants you around - but he's also driven by a incredibly strong compulsion to investigate and experiment right now, and snuggling takes up valuable exploration time in his mind - not to mention that holding still for more than 2 seconds is a near impossibility when you're that energetic!

He's not pushing for independence because he's at daycare too much or he doesn't want his mama. He's pushing because that's how he learns, how he asserts himself as a separate person ("I am me. I do X because I want to, when I want to.").

Henry still needs you, but in a different way than when he was a super-dependent little baby. He needs your encouragement and help to be active and explore, and trust me, he still needs your love and comfort (especially after said activeness and exploration results in a scraped knee or bumped head!).

I know it doesn't feel like it, but this independence is a good thing. You've given him the confidence and courage to strike out on his own and experiment and learn, and that's a big deal!

You're doing a GREAT job, and your little boy loves and needs you very much. (((hugs)))

other exciting stuff - I think we might start TTC again soon.

Hehe, I had a feeling you might've had TTC on your mind when you emailed me after my announcement =P How exciting!!! Yeah, actuallly when I need to get a lot done around the house, I used to ask my mom to come watch B occassionally so I can do stuff like cook/bake/household chores even though I'm at home with B that day and it helps A LOT. So I think your plan is good =) I'm sure A would love a little sibling too!

This! And don't worry about the daycare thing. B is not in daycare (and even when I was not on disability, I was only in the office 2x/wk and I'm with him 24/7 the rest of the week) and he's the same way. They're just at the age where they enjoy this "I can do it myself" attitude--I think it actually comes with becoming stronger walkers (and runners) b/c then they stop wanting to hold your hand, etc. and then they don't want to cuddle b/c they want to go about and be independent. Also like pp noted, they DO need us but they're also (sad but true) growing up pretty quickly so as they grow/change, so does the way they need us.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 11 months
    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Feeling okay...I'm still tired all the time, which is ridiculous b/c E has been STTN for months now.  But I'm getting up in the MOTN to pump, b/c it's the only way I can keep up with the bottles he takes during the day :(  I don't know how long I can keep this up, yet don't know what milk we'd give him if I stop (still no diary or soy).  need to talk to pedi.  I also need to be gone for 2 days next week, and I've never flown with that much milk before.  I'm sure it will be fine, but I'm still a little nervous.  But on a positive note, E has started taking steps!  He took 4 today =D(3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? In a few weeks.
    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Sleep, still.  We're transitioning to 1 nap.  He slept for 50 min today =P
    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites? We pretty much buy everything from amazon.  I try not to look at the deal sites much.
    (6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn? brestfriend, swaddle me, yoga ball, moby.(7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that? haven't had a lot of people touching him now.  agree with PP that ppl seem to touch newborns more?  I usually wore him, so you'd have to get in my personal space to touch him.  Or, they'd touch his feet, which i was okay with.  the few times ppl touched his hands, i cringed inwardly but was too chicken to say anything =P(8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc? Ergo for airport and on the plane.  We bring everything needed for bedtime routine, including the sheet (we use a flat sheet protector on top of the crib sheet), seahorse, bedtime books, lovey.  Also love having the video monitor when staying at grandma's or a friend's house - can close the door for naptime and not worry as much about people being too loud, or not hearing him when he wakes up.  We bought a cheap convertible (cosco scenera) which is relatively lightweight to travel with.

First, I'm still tired.  But I know I harp on this sometimes, but have you had your thyroid checked?  Might be worth mentioning to your dr.

For the milk issue - there is almond or rice milk that he could try.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? I can't believe we're less than a month to 2.

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?  He's not felt good lately - see #4.  He's also learning more words all the time - it's funny to see what he picks up sometimes - I think the latest thing is "oh, man!" LOL

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? 2 yr checkup!  Just booked that last week - and on a day I have off work - yay!

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? He's been sick and nothing really helps.  At least he's STTN again.  On Monday, I felt like the mother of a newborn again!

    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites? amazon.com, BuyBuyBaby, BRU (amazingly, most of their stuff is priced the same as Target).

    (6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn?  does my mom count?

    (7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that?  I was really shocked by it in the beginning, and then I realized I used to do the same thing without thinking about it.  I think I just make sure he's not really in their path very much - when we're out walking, they don't seem to want to touch him.

    (8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc?  We still co-sleep, so that's what we do when we're traveling.  We also try to keep new toys on hand that we can break out in the car if times get tough.  I also try to keep bedtime routine the same even though we're in a new place - bring his nighttime book(s), some of his bathtoys, etc.  We have a whole shopping bag full of his  toys that we take when traveling with him - and we keep them in groups of 3 - 3 cars, 3 trucks, 3 books, etc.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

LO is 20 months and 3 weeks and I'm 26 weeks PG

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

Had an awful gallbladder attack last night that is lingering today, so I am wiped. I am starting to think I might need to have it removed. I haven't had an attack since July, but still when I do, it's awful.

No new milestones...like everyone else, she just continues to expand/improve what she's doing. She's getting better at dressing herself, but it still also frustrates her which leads to tantrums. She's stopped banging her head/biting the furniture during tantrums but now does this weird thing where she stands on the TOP of her toes and twirls them rapidly and sort of rolls her ankles. I am afraid she's going to sprain her ankle or something! My MO right now is to be as patient, calm and empathetic as possible when she flies into these fits (which can happen at the drop of a pin)! It's all I can do right now, I guess.

    (3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

GTT on the 24th. Not looking forward to that. I also plan to talk to my doc about my gallbladder that day.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?

    See #2 above.

    (5) What are your favorite BR shopping sites?

Pretty much Amazon. But I do shop Zulily often (love their $15 credits) and also BabyCatalog and Earth Baby from time to time. But mostly Amazon. Or eBay. I look on Target but usually buy in-store. Same for BRU.

    (6) What item was critical for you during the first few weeks at home with your newborn?

Having my mom's help! And still!  But also, those Lanisoh soothie gel pads, the peri bottle they sent me home with from the hospital (OMG!), My Brestfriend Nursing Pillow and my DIY Moby wrap!

    (7) How do you feel about strangers coming up to you and touching your baby when out on a walk or at the store? How do you handle that?

Not a fan at all. Thankfully I wore her a lot in public and that seemed to discourage touching but I did get LOTS of looks and sometimes, followed around by curious folks (mainly other women who wanted ask about my wrap).

    (8) Do you have any tips for traveling with babies? Tips for the airport, airplane, sleeping when not at home, etc? I've flown with Libby 6 times and we've done a few road trips too. 1) Plan on everything taking longer (check-in, meals, etc.) 2) Bring extra diapers and changes of clothes for each of you 3) The Ergo has been a lifesaver in airports 4) Bring new, small toys for the trip and use them to distract baby once they've become bored with their surroundings 5) Pack healthy snacks and dole them out at regular intervals (once baby is on solids, of course)! 6) NIP is a great way to keep baby calm while traveling (9) What other questions would you like to see at upcoming check-ins? What activities are you doing with your LO? I need some ideas specifically geared towards active and curious toddlers!

i know i'm not sleeping enough, but that's a good point, i should probably get my thyroid checked just to rule it out.  i almost fell asleep at work today =(, and i slept 7 consecutive hours last night (which is more than usual!)

the problem with alternative milks is that they don't contain the same amount of nutrients as cow/goat/soy.  i need to look into it further though, and find something that works.  i've also heard good things about a particular brand of hemp milk.

  • Leah - Also wanted to reiterate what the other mamas have said...it's developmental that Henry wants more independence from you. In fact, the MORE attached the kiddo is to mama/dada the MORE secure he or she will feel to explore and be independent. So pat yourself on the back mama! I know it's hard though, to miss out on cuddle/snuggle time. I've learned to make it a game with Libby...like "I'm gonna kiss you! I need my Libby hugs!" She loves to "run away" and then run back to me and get kisses and hugs. Not the same as loving up a little baby, but it fills my bucket nonetheless!

Lisa - LOL, I was also going to ask what sound a Hippo makes and then I remembered because J collects them and has a stuffed toy (realistic one) that you squeeze and it grunts. Libby LOVES to make the elephant sound...I cannot really do it, but J taught her to purse her lips together to "trumpet" the sound. Crazy!

hah, i had the same question about both hippos and giraffes!  i attempt (and failure miserably) to make leafy chewing sounds for giraffes :)

LOL I make kind of slurping chewing noises for giraffes (the long tongues and all).

I also have no idea what noises alpacas and llamas make, and they have several of those in their books. Currently I just make a spitting sound. Devil
