burning nipples?

is it normal to feel a burning when my LO nurses? i use a nipple shield because we have latch issues, but when she first begins to nurse it burns SO bad. it gets better in about a minute into nursing but still burns a bit throughout the whole session. could this be thrush?

she is also fussy and pulls off and on...

Re: burning nipples?

  • You will feel pain at first for a while, but if the issue continues it is also a symptom of thrush. Does she have any spots in her mouth, or does she act like she is in pain while nursing? I thought I had thrush for a while, and it either was my nipples getting used to nursing/pumping or it was thrush that went away on its own.

  • I usually just lurk, but I had to chime in since I just went through this.  I am also using the nipple shield and trying to wean her off it, and I thought my nipple pain/burning/itching was just me getting used to her nursing without the shield.  But it got to be incredibly uncomfortable all the time and I would occasionally have shooting pains while nursing (which I read could also be a symptom of thrush).  I ended up calling my doctor and asking for treatment for thrush, and I feel so much better now!  So definitely call your doctor to see if they will RX nystatin cream or fluconazole tablets to treat thrush, or make an appointment.  Also, my daughter does not have any symptoms of thrush (she had her doctor's appointment friday and the doctor checked her mouth and diaper area).
