I want to get L a few puzzles for his birthday but don't know what is age appropriate right now. I was thinking those ones with the pegs? Or is he too old for that?
When my DD was 2, she could already do easy animal puzzles from Target and at age 2 she got a set from Melissa and Doug which was WAY too easy for her. Puzzles are a great gift and if he can't do them yet, put them away and try in a month or two.
I was going to say the Melissa and Doug wooden ones. They have number and letter ones and then also the ones with the big pieces with knobs. Maybe those are too easy though?
DD1 got a lot of puzzles last year for her 2nd b-day. Pegs and more complicated (20 piece ones). They say 3+ and now at 3, she can do them by herself most of the time!
Definitely Melissa and Doug. Anything they make is amazing. G just got a pizza set for her b-day that is made by Melissa and Doug. She loves it. Its round and has velcro circles on it. There are other pieces that have the opposite side of the velco and they are mushrooms, pepperoni, peppers, etc. Her and M have played with it for hours. I am sure L would love it. Pizza - can you go wrong? Seriously!
The peg puzzles are really easy for DD now, but she still likes to do them. You can't go wrong with any of the Melissa&Doug ones...and I love their puzzle storage systems for when you've collected dozens of their puzzles like we have!
DS is 18 months and has been able to do the Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles rated 2 years and up for a couple months now, probably. I would go for the next step up--ages 3 years and up.

The peg puzzles are too easy for my son. He loves these boxes of puzzles I got from www.babycenterstore.com
