I've heard Leigh as Lee quite often (Vivian Leigh). I know a guy named Leigh. But there is a family in my area with the last name Leighton, it is pronounced LAY-ton.

Well, as I learned in third grade (I before E except after C or when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh) it's pronounced lay-ton. Or, as I learned on Gossip Girl with Leighton Meester.

I really don't understand how people get Lee out of Leigh.  It makes absolutely no sense.

that is how celebrity leighton meester spells it and she was the first time I had heard or seen this name. Therefore I assumed that was the correct spelling for it.

Upstate NY native and we do that too.  Which makes me dislike all the --ton names because I have trouble saying them.

I don't get it either.  I have seen Leigh used as a middle name and pronounced Lee, but I always seem to just know even if I didn't know the name, that's how it is pronounced.

 I am surprised by how many people on here would pronounce it Lee-ton.  Really?  I'm not genius, but think about it.
