15 weeks and need to have colposcopy done

I am 15 weeks pregnant and after my first appointment i found out that i had an abnormal pap smear. I am scheduled for a colposcopy and I am really nervous that this might mean that i could have cancer. I need some feedback on this has anyone been through this????

Re: 15 weeks and need to have colposcopy done

  • I don't post much on here, but I actually had the same experience.  I had an abnormal pap, and the doctor told me the cells were extremely abnormal.  I was so scared that it meant I had cancer.  So I scheduled a colposcopy for a couple of weeks later (the soonest they could get me in).  The procedure itself really wasn't as painful or uncomfortable as I thought it would be.  Of course the tool they use to open the cervix isn't the most comfortable thing in the world, but really isn't too bad.  They numb the cervix with a chemical.  This did NOT hurt at all--something I was afraid was going to.  You could feel it touch the cervix, but it wasn't painful Then, the doctor did about 5 biopsies.  Again, there was a slight pinch when he took the biopsies, but it really wasn't as painful as I thought it would be.  The key was to relax the butt/pelvis muscles as much as possible.  That helped a lot.  I focused on relaxing those muscles and that seemed to make things easier for me. After the procedure, there was some spotting for a day or two and some cramping for the day.  But, basically I could go on with my life as normal.  Of course mentally I was drained, but physically I felt OK.  I got the results a few days later and all 5 of my biopsies were completely normal.  My doctor recommended a repeat pap 6 months later.  This all happened over a year ago and my 2 paps since have been completely normal.

Good luck to you!  I hope things turn out as well for you as they did for me.  Try not to stress (I know easier said than done).  Odds are you will probably be just fine since abnormal paps are not that uncommon.  Especially since the cervix cells can change so much during pregnancy.

  • I am sorry you have to go through this. I went through it at 15 weeks with DS. I was scared and didn;t know what was going in plus it didn't help my OB was not comforting about the whole thing.

It was of course an uncomfortable procedure not painful just well...uncomfortable;) They clipped a small piece off my cervix and put a paste on it. I didn't really bleed afterward just a little brown discharge. They examined the cells and of course confirmed it was sever dysplasia (not cancer).

My OB said that in a lot of cases after birth and the trauma to the cervix it goes away. Not always but a lot of the time. Mine unfortunately did not thus a LEEP followed after DS.

They said not to worry about baby that it was a common procedure. Good luck and you will do great!

  • I had one done in high school and everything turned out fine.  They didn't see anything wrong and didn't even need to do a biopsy.  I've had normal paps every year since.  Good luck at your appt!

  • Went through the same thing at 16 weeks - don't worry, you'll be fine.

I was told that with some pregnancies, it can change the way the cells look in the body and that was the case with me.  Did your doctor tell you what level?  When you have the colposcopy done, it doesn't hurt or anything, just more uncomfortable than anything!  They'll be able to tell you fairly quickly if everything is normal, but stay stress-free about it...usually it's nothing and if it is a mild case, more often than not, it corrects itself.

Also, for some reason my normal doctor wasn't in that day I had mine done, and the other doctor left out a few details.  After you have it done, you'll notice that you may have some pink discharge, DON'T FREAK OUT!  It's normal!  However, if it's red blood or discharge that comes out, THEN call your doctor.

Good luck on the procedure...you'll be okay! :)

  • I had an abormal pap (1st time ever) when I went in to confirm this pregnancy.  Came back as LESI (low grade epithelial squamous something or other) they had me schedule a colposcopy when they called with the results and it wasn't sitting well with me.  I scheduled it and then a few days later they said they would wait until after I had the baby because it was a "low grade change."  A few weeks later, I switched drs and started seeing midwives.  They talked to their OB and he suggested I have it done. So I scheduled an appt. and cancelled it twice. (I even came on the bump posting "what would you do" questions) I was freaked out.   I went with my gut, had them repeat a pap and then if that was abnormal I would go from there with the colposcopy.  I got the results back just last week and completely normal! Go figure.

Just being pregnant alters the cells of the cervix.  Having sex the day before can give you abnormal results as well (I had sex the day before because I wasn't expecting to have a pap done) SO I just wanted to give you my experience because I'm no doctor (I'm a nurse haha) but I thought they were jumping the gun just a bit because having never had an abnormal results then all of a sudden....something didn't seem right.  I figured let's repeat the pap in 3 months much less invasive towards the cervix while pregnant! Most drs wont even biopsy while pregnant.  Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine with whatever you have done.

  • I had the same thing happen around 15 weeks. The first Dr. made a big deal about it and scared me to death. The procedure is uncomfortable and I bleed pretty bad, but the past they used stopped it. My follow up apt was alot better and the other Dr. told me to think of if as if my cervex had a cold. Try not to freak out and stay calm. I wish it had been explained better to me beofore my follow up apt. It is common and during labor many women flush out the abnormal cells.
  • Lots of women have abnormal paps especially during or after pregnancy.

Mine was abnormal after I had Jules and I had a colposcopy. It came back as having cervical polyps, no big deal.  I actually have my follow up pap at my next appointment. They didn't do one when I was first seen because it hadn't been 6 months yet.
