red bleeding after vaginal ultrasound?

I posted last week asking about spotting in early pregnancy. Well, I am still having brown spotting (for a week now), so I went to the doctor again this morning and had a vaginal ultrasound. The doctor said everything looks great. And my hormone levels from last week were great. She did see brown blood on my cervix. However, later in the afternoon, I had a quarter to a fifty-cent size amount of bright red bleeding. The doctor said to monitor it and see it if becomes a heavier flow. So far, it's been 2 hours and nothing more. So I'm hoping it was just from the ultrasound and speculum for the internal exam. Anyone else have bright red bleeding after a vaginal ultrasound / internal exam?

Again, I'm from 1st tri, but wanted to ask here to get more responses.

Re: red bleeding after vaginal ultrasound?

  • During my first few weeks of pregnancy (we found out at 6 weeks 3 days), that happened to me.  My OBGYN said that it could be caused by the extra blood flow in the cervix area and could also mean that I am sensitive in that area.  He said that as long as it was not much and did not come with cramping that there was nothing to worry about.  Hopefully that is the case with you, but my best advice (that I got from an Early Pregnancy class we went to the other day) would be that if it doesn't feel right to you and makes you worried...it is never wrong to call the doctor.  That is what they are there for and it is always better safe than sorry.  I hope this helps! :)

  • It's pretty common to have a little bit of spotting after a vaginal ultrasound, or even just a vaginal exam. The tissue down there (especially the cervix) is very sensitive, and everything is engorged with blood anyway. Just a tiny bit of trauma can cause bleeding/spotting. As long as it isn't super heavy and prolonged, you likely have nothing to worry about.

  • I was told after a vaginal u/s that I have a sensitive cervix and that a bit of bleeding afterward would be normal for me. Dr. also said that some spotting can happen after sex and it's normal.

  • This also happened when I had them done. As long as you arent soaking through then you are fine. Spotting is common and dont stress about it :)
  • I've had bleeding after every exam so far this pregnancy. I was put on pelvic rest .. no sex no nada .. because anything near my cervix was causing bleeding. My cervix is still closed tight and babies growing just fine .. doc said some people's cervix is just super sensitive during pregnancy. I am expecting twins .. don't know if that's affecting it too or not. I know some people will have implantation bleeding between 6-8 weeks too ..

Good luck .. I wish you the best!
