Follow up to today's post about how a strange case of intense itching lead to a doctor's appt with bloodwork and possible cholestasis:
I saw a different doctor in the practice today, but he too was concerned with the level of itching and the possibility of cholestasis. Unfortunately Tuesday's labs weren't back yet- no results until Monday. My next appt. is Wednesday, which is 39 weeks. The doctor told me today that if the labs showed high levels of blood salts (?) and there was an indication of cholestasis, we'd induce at 39 weeks- which is next week! Good thing I've been bringing my hospital bag in the car to my last few appts (even though I'm "low and very soft" but still have zero dilation!).
Thanks to all who were concerned for me! More news Monday I hope.
Re: F/U: Itching, cholestasis results
why so long for blood test results? that is slow!
I think they were probably testing for bile salts.
I think you're right- bile salts sounds more accurate. The lab is not on-premise and according to the nurse, this type of bloodwork is not standard and vey thorough, so it's one of those things that takes up to a week to get back.
The way I see it, if they thought me or the baby was in serious, immediate danger they'd have sent me to L&D for labs since the hospital returns bloodwork immediately. It also means, even if I have to get induced, LO will be an October baby for sure (unless I go into natural labor within the next 36 hours, that is!).
