Thanksgiving? (American ladies, anyway.)
I keep thinking, "We're almost to October and then Thanksgiving will be just one more month away!" It's always been my favorite holiday but the past two weeks I have been craving turkey, dressing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie like mad. My parents are divorced so I get to hit up two Thanksgiving dinners. SCORE!
The in laws are ridiculous and make steaks on Thanksgiving. WTF? Crazies. We won't be visiting their dinner.
Re: Is anyone else already thinking about...
I LOVE Thanksgiving!!! Eating Thanksgiving dinner while pregnant will be my ultimate moment of feasting glory, haha.
And steak on Thanksgiving!?!? That's horrifying! My in-laws don't serve cranberries on Thanksgiving (not even the easy kind from the can!) and that is almost a reason for me not to go there. If they served steak-- forget about it!
Mmmm... stuffing...
Horrifying!!
I thought so too. MIL asked me at her visit a few weeks ago if we would come there for Thanksgiving again this year. I tried the whole, "Well we visited y'all last Thanksgiving." angle but she kept pushing it. Finally I just said, "I just really want turkey and dressing." We agreed to go visit them the week before Thanksgiving and eat their stinkin' steaks then.
Ah. SO jealous. I knew Canada celebrated Thanksgiving but didn't realize y'all did the same traditional meal. I need dual-citizenship so I can hit up both holidays.
I'm so looking forward to Thanksgiving! Like you, DH and I get multiple meals as well.
My family's tradition is to have a huge Thanksgiving breakfast. Then we head over to DH's parents house for a small dinner. Then Saturday evening we go to my parent's house for dinner. Then one last time on Sunday all the in-laws head to one of his older sister's house for a HUGE dinner. Everyone goes home with leftovers, it's amazing.
However, at all these dinners there is definitely turkey, not steak! That's so weird! Haha.
Soo excited too!! I'm buying a maternity shirt from cafepress that says "I came for the pie" lol.
I'm hoping we will know the gender by then so we can announce to everyone at dinner. I'm lucky that my family is very small and don't usually make a big to-do about thxgiving, but my SIL always makes an amazing dinner so we go to her house every year (my parents come too).
Confession . . . I dont like thanksgiving turkey . . . I only like really thinly sliced deli meat turkey
.
My parents make a turkey, but they also fry a duck that has been basted with cajun spice - it is delicious. DH had never tried it and skipped eating it hte first 2 yrs he went to my parents, but he finally caved and its his favorite thing too, lol.
I will say my favorite part is green bean casserole. So much that I make it several times a year, just because.
Oh yah! You should see that pumpkin dishes I've got planned!
Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins.
I love Thanksgiving and this time of year.
Edit: Steaks?!
I am really looking forward to the food, I love Thanksgiving
What I am not looking forward to is the in-law situation. They make everything so difficult because they are anti-social and don't like going to anyone else's place for dinner. So I have been hosting the holiday to ensure I get to spend it with my parents and they come too. Last year we didn't even see them. It was glorious. Not sure this year though... She makes stovetop. I love stovetop but I like my momma's stuffing for Thanksgiving!! It's a must for me. Even if she comes over to our house, she ALWAYS has to have her own Thanksgiving the day after. I guess so she can make her stovetop.
My SIL makes a sweet potato casserole with a brown sugar crumble topping on it. CAN'T wait! Really good mashed potatoes sound good too.
Bring on the buffet
I would totally bring you a plate of leftovers.
I am way excited! My mom is actually going to have the dinner the Sunday before hand to make it easier on us so we don't have to go traveling between the two families on the actual day. So, I get two days of Thanksgiving dinners and can actually eat at each one! Yum!
I do like Mom's food better generally, probably because I grew up on that kind of cooking, but IL's isn't that bad either. DH's aunt makes some amazing bread that is always great to look forward to though.
ETA: How could I forget that I find out the sex around that time as well! Right now I am 20 weeks the day after Thanksgiving. I am hoping my OB will let me schedule the appointment for a little earlier so I can find out and announce on Thanksgiving.
Awwww, thanks. I was going to say something about it being my 2nd year in a row, but then I probably would have been switched to Christmas so I decided to keep quiet!
OMG I loooove Thanksgiving, I just love that it's all about food and spending time with the family, we always go to my mom's with my aunts and cousins and have a great time. My sister and I have been campaigning for years to change Christmas into Thanksgiving part 2 (i.e. not buy any gifts, just food + family) but nobody is able to hold to the no gift part.
Also we will have our 20 week appt that week so we'll be finding out the sex...even more reason to look forward to it!
my read shelf:
I hosted last year which I enjoyed but hubby doens't want to host this year so we are going to MILs! I guess it is easier for me not to have to cook, but I do love to cook....
I'm not a fan of a lot of thanksgiving foods, like pumpkin pie (gag) sweet potato casserole (double gag) BUT I do love the turkey (i like to grab a leg... mmm dark meat), and other kinds of pie! I might make a chocolate pecan pie. Mmm.
I think this year I'll be able to do some serious damage! My appetite is in overdrive and by then I'll be just as hungry, or more so AND hopefully the appetite won't be accompanied by horrible nausea!
I prefer Christmas to t-giving, probably because I'm not american, I'm irish and Christmas was always a big family time for me. This year I'll be having t-giving with hubbys family and flying home to mine for christmas
Same here!!!
I love thanksgiving! Usually we're at my sisters house and she cooks an enormous meal....BUT this year we must go to the MIL's in Louisiana,
Im not super excited about this, and I know the food will not be fantastic, I've been listening for years about her bad cooking...
