No it isn't. When you own a home your monthly payment is putting money into it because you end up with equity and property. Rent is just pissing money down the drain with nothing at the end. It's no different than paying for cable really.

The last couple of years, I've forgotten what this word meant.

    Haha! Very true.

I think we're all "renting" from the bank right now.

  • Yes, both sets of parents offered to let us move in with them.  We both have parents who would do anything to help us out.

I am not only wanting to go back to school to get a good job, but I want a degree that I am happy with.  Education is very important to H and I, which is why we are considering making sacrifices.  Also, we believe in a career and not just a job.  H could've found a new job that paid just as much, if not more than the one he lost.  But he took a huge cut because he wanted a career.  That is another reason behind returning to school.

Also, if I return to school, we will not be paying for it.  As I already said, we both come from families who will do anything for us.  My parents support my decision for returning to school and want to pay for it - just like they did the first time around. Say what you want about it.

The house we are renting is owned by my father, which is why we have been okay with putting money into it.  It's not like we are getting screwed by some idiot landlord.  We are okay with not being able to take with us the things we have done to the house if/when we move out.

  • Can I ask what it is you're going back to school for?

I had a crappy degree too. By taking a $10/hr job in the field and working hard I was promoted within a year, and had my masters paid for with more than double the salary, and more vacation. I had to start somewhere though.

My sister has a psych degree and worked her azz off in retail for 3 years. She's now a manager and makes more money than she knows how to spend. Entry level jobs pay off eventually.

ETA: That was a major digression and sounded biitchy, although it wasn't my intention for it to.

Timing is everything, I guess.  I keep typing a really long response about my job/career/money situation, but I already know all the debatable parts of it and I'm not up to the argument.  Sometimes working your as.s off or taking a crappy job and working your way up don't work out like you'd hoped, and not all entry level jobs pan out to be high-paying management positions.

Since you have parents that would do anything for you....would your dad consider letting you live in the house rent free for a period of time?  That would be much better than living with them IMO.

  • Um, no. In my area, we have a high unemployment rate coupled with an extremely high amount of college graduates. It's not just my friends - all my old coworkers and staff (I used to work in management for an optical chain) were college educated. The rate of pay was $9/hour and if you worked your way up the chain after 4 years, you'd make as much as $12/hour.

I did taxes last year for a nonprofit that served low income individuals that needed help preparing their income taxes. I helped so, so many people that made under $25k that had student loans to pay off.  Most of these people were working more than one job. It's not just MY friends - it's pretty much everyone I know. It's insulting to anyone who is underemploued to assume that "with a little hard work" they'd be able to make more money or get a better job.

ETA: I guess I can't quote on my phone. That was in reply to the person who assumed that anyone, anywhere can get a basic admin job and work their way up to the top. But not me or my friends, because clearly we are all idiots.
