NBR: Where to buy cakepops?

I absolutely love penguins (weird, I know) and I wanted to do a penguin party for DS 1st birthday. I've been contemplating if I should try to make them or just buy them. Has anyone ever bought cakepops from an online store? Which one?

  • I haven't bought them but they are so easy to make. Check out my blog (Thanksgiving post) for making them. Also, you could make them now and put them in the freezer until it's party day (they last 4-6 months in the freezer). And you will seriously save a ton of money making them yourself.

  • Hmmm, maybe I'll try it. Do you think it would be hard to make penguins? (your daughter is super cute btw).

  • Super easy. It's just shaping them and having the right stuff to make the beak, etc. If you start making some now, you can enjoy the 'practice' ones. :)

  • Sounds good. I just read about you making 6 batches of the sugar cookies. In my excitement of making cake balls, I made 5 boxes of cakes for Christmas ones.

Yeah, I'll let that sink in.

ETA: OP, you'll have a blast and they taste so good. My DH eats them right out of the freezer so keep a count if you make them ahead of time.

Yeah, I'll let that sink in.

  • For our wedding we had cakepops from a company called just a bite cake pops.  You could google them and look at their website but they were definitely pricey and if you could figure out how to make them on your own it would be way cheaper :)

Yup. Add in the fact that we originally had 3 parties to go to. I figured that'd be a good way to get rid of them. Until we had all that snow last year. 2 of the parties got cancelled. I'm so glad they can be frozen.

FYI OP: 1 box of cake mix will make 40-70 cake balls depending on size. Take that into consideration. I didn't.

  • I don't know where to buy them, but they are really hard to make.  Seriously.  I thought it would be so easy.  Basically you mix baked cake and frosting and form it into balls.  Well, making the cake pops was really hard.  First of all, I couldn't get the balls to stay on the stick.  They kept falling off.  Then, when I dipped the lollipops into white chocolate to coat them, it started to make the cake dough part melt, because the white chocolate was warm.  It was also almost impossible to coat the pops evenly and keep it on the stick.  I made them last week for a baby shower I was hosting (as favors) and needless to say, they turned out so ugly that I was too embarrassed to give them away.  If I had to do it again, I would've just bought them.

You missed a couple really important steps. First, you need to chill them. That's what stops them from falling apart when you dip them in the chocolate. Second, you need to dip the stick in the melted chocolate, then push it into the ball and give it a couple seconds to harden. This is what holds the stick in. My friend called me 2 days ago saying the exact same thing.
