Progesterone Injection Timing?

My DH wants to go to a ball game tonight and will be gone during the 6-9pm window we were given for the Progesterone injections.  I don't have anyone else to do it, so my options are do it before 5 pm or try in my leg... I am not brave enough to stick it in there myself like some of you ladies all twisty and turny in the mirror!

Would a few hours make a difference? (I am emailing my nurse, but I believe she is out today...)

Re: Progesterone Injection Timing?

  • I don't know about the timing, but am going to suggest giving it to yourself in rear.  I have been doing it myself since day 1 (well day 2, since the nurse did it the first day), with absolutely no problems.

DH is too squeamish to help, and I didn't want to have to depend on someone outside the household and their schedule, so I just gave it a shot (no pun intended) and it was very easy to do. I realize you might not want to chance it the first time at a ball game, but just wanted to share my experience.

Another thought is what time does the game start?  Could you go a little later or leave a little early?

Hopefully the nurse will tell you its ok to do it a little early to make it easier on you.  Good luck and have fun at the game!

  • what time will your DH be home?  i don't think an hour or so will make much of a difference if you wanted him to do it later...as long as your body is getting those hormones and you don't deviate too often, i think you will be fine...i did that a few nights...and my progesterone levels were stellar!  GL!

Ok, so you just stood in the mirror and stuck it in?  My concern was just that it takes FOREVER due to how thick it is.

I am not going to the game with him, otherwise I would totally drop my pants, no shame here......

I think I might have to you tube this business....

  • I had to do mine by myself due to DH's disability.  I did them in the thigh because I felt unsure about being all twisted up. All in all, it wasn't terrible.  I just put on my game face and did what needed to be done.  However, if you don't normally do it there, you will be SORE the next day.  I had some pretty awful pain the first week and then the pain went away for the most part (except for the hard knots).  If you don't plan to switch to your thigh full time, then I would try to stick with your normal location.

My RE said to do it within an hour of the normal time whenever we asked about variation.

ETA - If you do you tube it, don't watch the videos of people claiming to do the injection for the first time.  They get all anxious and will make you more freaked out about doing it than they will reassure you that you'll be ok.

  • I was told it's very important to do the PIO shot at the same time every day.

I have done almost all my PIO butt shots myself, due to DH's work schedule.  It's not as hard as it sounds.  Just have everything ready, stick and push.  Slap the gauze on right after and give yourself a little massage and you are done!  It sounds intimidating, but it really is doable!!

    Good luck!

  • I actually was just talking to my nurse about this b/c DH is OOT this weekend.  She strongly cautioned me against doing it myself, especially in the thigh.  She said it just gets really, really sore if you do it there.  She also said that the time is not nearly as essential as with the stims. She said as long as we did it in the evening, in general, it would be fine (we normally do 10 p.m.)

So, I think you'd be fine to fudge the time a little, but you may want to double check with your nurse/dr. just in case they follow stricter guidelines than my clinic.  I will say, my clinic has been on the VERY conservative side of most things (3 day bed rest, etc.) so I really think you'd be fine fudging by an hour or so.

In my case, a co-worker of DH (who's a nurse) is going to come over tonight and tomorrow night to give me the shot, and she's going to teach me a way I can give it to myself not in the thigh, but easier than trying to twist around and do the butt--i think kind of the hip?  I'll report back to you ladies!
