Hello,
I read that it was safe to eat peanut butter during my pregnancy (no known allegies in the family), but is it safe for me to eat it around him now that he's a newborn? I love my peanut butter and jelly, but don't want to put the baby at risk for anything.
TIA
Re: can i eat peanut butter around my newborn?
It is probably fine, but I'll share my story.
Hubby and I don't have any known family history of nut allergies and I LOVE peanut butter. I ate pb all through pregnancy with the okay from my midwife. And I ate it while nursing my baby. At 18 months, we discovered he had a reaction to peanut butter and had him tested. Turns out he has a moderate/severe peanut allergy. I am shocked.
Now that I'm expecting #2, DS' pediatrician advised that I avoid all nuts throughout the pregnancy and while nursing. Our house is now nut-free, too. I'm unsure of what caused his peanut allergy, but I really hope our next little guy doesn't have it.
It's safe, but i wouldn't kiss her on the mouth right after you eat it.
SHORT story..
We have no known food allergies on my side or my DH's side. I ate PB like it was going out of style. Daily throughout my pregnancy and while i BF. There were times where my son looked like he rubbed his face in poison ivy and it was probably the times i ate PB (or his other allergens) and kissed his face (b/c how can you not?). Looking back, i wish i saw the signs. So just make sure if you notice rashes/blisters/itchiness.. you question yourself if you just had PB and it came in contact with him.. I was also told to avoid peanuts with my current pregnancy
