DH came up with this name...my first instinct was "no way" but within minutes I grew to like it. My sister poo-pooed it b/c of the Hugh Heffner link, but that doesn't bother me. Plus Hugh Laurie & Hugh Jackman came to mind for me first..followed by Huey Lewis (I do like Huey as a NN for a young child).
It's one of those names that I think people will either love, or it will quickly grow on them, like it did me, or they will hate it from the get-go.
Which one are you??
Re: Give it to me straight re: HUGH.
It could definitely grow on me. I prefer classic names that aren't seen every day. Hugh falls into that category.
You're right -- ppl will love it or hate it but who cares!
1998 Ovarian Cancer Survivor. 7 Miscarriages: 6w, 13w2d, 4w2d, 7w4d (DD's twin), 5w. Failed Tubal after c/s (!!): 5w2d, 6w4d
I don't love it but I don't hate it.
I think if you like it, use it. With all of the naming trends going on in recent years, Hugh will not be that out of place.
I'm also a big fan of Hugo.

It's not my favorite name, but it's ok.
A friend of ours from middle school's name is Hugh. He got teased about Hugh Hefner, but he always said "Yeah, he gets laid all the time and he's a million years old, go ahead and laugh."
The only bad thing I can say about the name is, they misspelled it in the yearbook once, they renamed him Huge. It didn't help that the first three letters of his ln are Cow.
If your son has a weight issue, that could become a problem.
All of this. DH loves Sandra for a girl. At first I was not a fan, but I like it now (expect for the nn Sandy), and I would use it.

I really like it, but I also have only positive associations with it. I think Hugh Heffner won't come to mind often with lo's generation. Hugh Laurie (Black Adder!!) and Hugh Jackman to me are good associations. I just ignore Hugh Grant.
First person that came to my mind was a guy from uni that was in my drawing classes that was on the football team. Very smart and athletic, very down to earth and nice, and didn't hurt that he was easy on the eyes.
Not my style.
It is my Great Grandfather's name, it is also the name of one of my favorite uncles. I give it a big thumbs up.
