My maternity leave will be over in about 5 weeks. I have decided not to go back to work. I am having a hard time writting my resignation letter and i'd like to ask for your assistance. Here's a little back story. My job doesn't pay me a heck of a lot. By the time i pay a sitter for both my kids i'll be bringing home enough for gas and groceries. Apparently my employer is not interested in offering me the raise that i rightfully deserve so it's not worthwhile for me to return to work. That being said, i have decided to stay home with my kids. Side note- my hubby and i always agreed that if we had 2 or more kids, i would stay home while they were young, unless i had a great paying job that made it worth my while.
I like the job (i am a receptionist/office assistant) and i really like the ladies i work with. I have never had any issues and have never been in trouble. I'd like to leave on a positive note. I haven't come up with anything that i am happy with, and i need to submit the resignation letter this week. I really appreciate any help!
Re: End of Mat leave. Resignation letter assistance needed
I would just do something plain and simple.
Dear _______________________________, Please accept this letter as my formal resignation in my position of _____________ which will be effective as of _________. I have decided to stay at home with my new baby. It was a difficult decision, but I know it is what is best for me and my family at this moment. I want to thank you for this opportunity and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help ease the transition for my replacement.

This. I'd only get into compensation issues in an exit interview, if they provide one.

Leave the personal issues out of it. You do not have to give a reason in your letter. When I resigned all my letter said was Please accept my resignation effective _________. Sincerely, pepomntpat.
I did talk about the reasons at my exit interview, but there is no reason to go into those details in your letter.
This is exactly what you need to write. This is what I did when I resigned one teaching job for another(in different districts).
I resigned at the end of my maternity leave also (well 2 weeks prior) and I went in to hand deliver my letter of resignation and talk to my boss. She is older than I and has grown children, so she completely understood and supported my decision to be a SAHM. She also promised a positive letter of recommendation in the future if I ever needed it.
I do agree with PPs that you should not mention a raise. Then it doesn't sound like a letter of resignation, but more like "give me a raise or I'll quit", which is not what I think you have in mind.
As a former HR Rep.. I say THIS EXACTLY.
Use your exit interview to discuss reasons/feelings, etc.
THIS.
I just wrote, "please accept this letter as notice of the resignation. I will not be returning at the end of my maternity leave." I also threw in a "I appreciate the opportunities for professional growth that this company has afforded me in the past 3 years." or something thereabouts.
I hated my boss, but loved my coworkers, so I went in and told my coworkers in person and dropped off my letter. I was going to email my boss to let him know the letter was there, but he walked in while I was talking to my coworkers (he works out of a different location). So awkward.
