PSA: The 90 minute baby sleep program

I just got the book Wednesday night and read the pertinent parts so I could start it yesterday.  I know it has only been a little over a day, but everything it said has been true for my LO.  Yesterday naps were great and his sleep last night was much better.  I hope this keeps up for us.  I really like how a lot of what the book talks about is backed with science and makes sense.  I know there are a lot of sleep books out there, but this one is great and it was a super easy read and start up.  I just wanted to share....

  • Are there any quick tips you can share?

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I needed it today, I'm reading it now!
  • I dont have the book, but does it say to start putting them down after 90 min or they should be asleep after 90 min? Nap time for us is a nightmare.

  • i am sure that i will miss good details, so it would be good to still read the book...but here are some tips to get started:

-babies are usually tired and we mistake it for other things, leading to a worse problem

-90 min. cycles are natural and should be encouraged for more rest, which will lead to better sleeping overall.

-next time your baby wakes up, note the time and 90 mins later (few mins before) LO needs help to get to sleep.  my LO shows signs of tiredness about 80 mins, so I take him and rock him and put him down for a nap.

-when LO wakes up again, they may just need some help getting back to sleep so rock, paci, etc.  Or if it seems like they are truly done sleeping, then get them up and note the time, start cycle again.

-it doesn't matter if sleep was 5 mins or 3 hours, do the same thing.

-LO is more alert and more readily absorbs new things during awake time, etc.

Anyways there is a lot more good info in the book, and each age group has different things that change in the cycle.  I hope that helps those interested get started.

  • I think this is really interesting. I have a cousin who swears by Babywise, and it seems like these 2 theories could be put together.  What does it say to do for bed time?  Anything different or will LO know to sleep longer than during regular daytime naps?

Somebody gave me babywise, but when i tried to read it a couple weeks after lo was born, it was just too much text to get through, haha!  Bedtime I think is that their circadian rhythm will develop on its own.  you can also (doesn't advise waking baby) if it seems needed, wake the baby 90 mins before the desired bedtime to put them on track to go to bed when you do.  last night he went to bed earlier than normal and i thought it would just be a nap, but he stayed asleep for 4 hours.  this has never happened yet, the longest we have ever had was 2 hours.  i am hoping tonight goes well.

  • We are following The Sleep Lady, her theory is very similar.  She explains that everything is 45 minutes though (so, half of 90 minutes....).  My LO is awake for 90 minutes each time.  She needs to be in her crib when the 90 minutes are up, otherwise WATCH OUT!  :-)  Then she sleeps in 45 minute cycles.  She usually wakes slightly after each 45 minute cycle, but if she's not ready to be awake, she will fuss but go back to sleep.  If she's ready to get up, she won't fuss, but will coo and talk to herself.  Babies should wake up happy.  If they wake up fussing, then they are not ready to get up.  Her naps are either 45 mins, 1.5 hours, 2.25 hours, or 3 hours.  Once she gets to 3 hours, we get her up.  We NEVER wake her in the middle of a cycle, that means crankypants.

I think a lot of the sleep books say the same things, just in different ways.
