Are your students constantly asking how old you are? It seems like every.single.time. I sub (at least 2x a week!) I'm asked how old I am. I don't have a problem telling them, I just wonder why they are soooo obsessed with my age!
I don't know what grades you are subbing for but that is totally normal in the grade schools. I teach first grade and they always ask me. I just tell them and then they stop asking. It is when I have tried not to tell them that it becomes a big deal.
Yep, and I've gotten that ? since I was a sub yrs. ago. It's especially asked at the hs level. My theory.....kids these days are being raised to consider themselves equals in some way to the adults in their lives (parents having discussions instead of parenting), so they are trying to size up their connection to you. I've always just told them b/c I figure if I don't make it a big deal, they'll forget about it. My friend does the whole "you don't ask a lady her age" and they bug her relentlessly (she's only 27). I love watching the 9th graders' expressions and listening to their responses when I tell them I was born in the 70's. If they only knew how much better we had it. You couldn't make me be a teenager today for anything. These kids have way too much to deal with.
I get it a lot more in junior high/high school than in grade school. They always try to guess, too, so I humor them and let them try. (Then I tell them).
subbing I used to get it all the time (and I just answered them like it was no big deal so they'd move on). They used to ask when I subbed for these reasons I think:
I was new to them
and they'll test a sub more like ask personal questions when they know it's rude
I was younger and they wanted to know how young
Now that I'm old Mrs. So and So who has been around for a while and they have to see me every day and be accountable for their behavior with me on a daily basis they ask a whole lot less. what a party pooper I've become.
Oddly enough, no. If course, I look much older than I am and plenty old enough to be their teacher so they probably just see me as another old lady teacher. I would take it as a compliment if I were you!
