Toy Storage-Help!

I am in need of storage for toys esp in our playroom.  We use the 3 rack system with the bins in R's room and I'm thinking about using the same in the playroom, but I would kind of like to find something that "hides" the toys once they're put away.

What do you use to store toys?  In bedroom?  Living room/main level?

Thanks!

Re: Toy Storage-Help!

  • Holly's main play area is our front living room, which is the room you walk into when you enter our house. Her play kitchen and some other things are there, so it's obvious a kid lives here, but I try to keep things put away as best I can. In that room, we have a cabinet I got from Big Lots for $100... Nothing fancy, but it does the trick. It's kind of like this, but has two open shelves at the top that have canvas bins in them. She can open and close it herself, and can reach all the shelves. We also keep baskets on the bottom shelves of our end tables in there--one holds library books, the other holds music instruments. We also have an old computer armoire (that does not contain a computer) that I painted to match the other cabinet (also very cheap) where I store coloring stuff, play doh, etc. Again, I like that you can close it up.

In her room, she really only has stuffed animals and books, which are stored on an awesome dollhouse bookshelf my dad built. It's kind of like this, but awesomer because Papaw built it. hehe.

  • I LOVE our Ikea Trofast Toy Storage. They have several options for height, width, etc, as well as bin color. It hides the toys, but it's easy to get them out. Our rule is generally one bin out at a time (at least if he's taking them to a different room), so it keeps some of the chaos at bay. Here's a link to what our's looks like (https://domesticdabblings.blogspot.com/2011/04/toy-storage-labels.html).

ETA: I actually have that set-up in our basement, but he can bring one bucket up to the family room if he wants. I've converted our coat closet to a toy storage closet, so I have clear lidded containers in there, as well as puzzles/games. Same rule - one container out at a time.

In J's bedroom, I have the slanted shelves/containers (like you have I think). It looks more messy to me, so I prefer that to be in his room where I don't have to look at it all the time.

And you're welcome to come over & see it anytime you want! :)

  • We have this Expedit bookshelf in white from Ikea, but they have the same series with 2*2 and other shelf options. Be sure to scroll down to view the complementary products. We got the Lexman boxes to fit in it, but you can also add inserts with doors or drawers, depending on your needs. It's been great, so far and looks really nice in DD's room.

  • Ditto Ikea's Expedit and Trofast systems here too... I have a 2x2 Expedit with one open square, one drawer insert, and two fabric bins, as well as a small Trofast hung on the wall, in my craft room. I got this Trofast off CL but haven't gotten the bins yet. It will be for Holly's art supplies in the craft room.

ETA: Wow, this post was link-tastic. hehe...

  • In our living room we have another one from Target in white with 6 cubes and 3 black canvas bins.  That way you can have some shelves open and some shelves with a drawer for smaller and things you want to hide.

Target often has the 9 cube ones (in different finishes) on sale for $39.99 and I think the canvas bins run around $7 to $8.

  • We have a toybox in our living room, along with shelves that hold canvas bins. The big toys either sit on a shelf, or go in the toy box. The bins hold smaller items (we have one with blocks, another with animals, and another with misc. small stuff) I like toys on the shelf because they are readily accessible for Caleb. The toy box is great because there is no way I could put a big Tonka truck or a Little People farm in a small organizer.

Thanks! Yes it is, but I hope no one took that as me pimping out my severely-neglected blog.  Just thought it would be easiest to link to that.

  • We mostly use the cube system from Target. But I found one at Costco that I absolutely fell in love with for our living areas since it's much sturdier and looks more like "real" furniture.  I can't find the link on Costco's site, but I know they still have them at the one on Hanes Mall Blvd.  They were called room dividers.  They are AWESOME!

  • We just use a GIANT Rubbermaid box in Wesley's room...LOL. We also have some drawers on wheels that we pull in and out of the closet. My mother has a cute bench that doubles as a toy box (something like this, but no ways as fancy and hers is neutral). She has it in the nursery at her house.

  • Wow, y'all are so helpful!  These ideas are awesome.  I've never been to IKEA.  I'm missing out, huh?!?  I've got to get shopping ASAP.  Our "playroom" (which is really the front living room---probably meant as a formal living room) is looking a little messy.  THANKS!!
