Help! My milk smells funny!

Can someone please tell me why my milk smells like eggs? It has been in the fridge for not even a week and when I opened a bottle yesterday, a wave of this nasty smell hit me. There are no chunks, just the smell. I smelled the milk in a sippy cup behind the bottle, which is newer than the milk in the bottle and has never been out of the fridge, and it also smells like eggs... Almost like rotten eggs.

Is it bad? Should I pitch it? Or is it still safe to use since it is not chunky and not past its "expiration?"

Thanks!

  • If it smells like something close to rotten eggs I'd guess it's bad and toss it.  I have excess lipase in my milk and tend to get a funky smell to milk I keep in the refrigerator (when I don't scald it beforehand) more than two days and I chuck it.  If you taste it and find it's gross I would get rid of it.

  • OK. It sucks... it's 16 ounces and it has always lasted at least a week before. Not sure why it's being weird now!

  • Are you sure its not just something you ate?  Does it smell "bad" or just unusual?

  • It smells unusual, but it's also not a pleasent smell.

My problem is that I don't drink milk (other than chocolate milk), and I will open a gallon of fresh skim milk at our house and think it smells bad. My DH has to convince me that that's the way it's supposed to smell.

AF just came yesterday, so I'm wondering if she's messing with my smell receptors? And there is some old tuna helper in our fridge that DH needs to toss... maybe that could do it?

  • If your milk usually lasts that long in the fridge with no problems, and you refrigerated it like normal I would guess that its fine and something you ate made it smell strange.  Some women's milk doesn't last as long as others but if yours usually does I would assume its safe to say this milk would be fine too.  Also your body does strange things before AF comes so maybe that made your milk smell a little different, due to the hormones?  If it doesn't smell spoiled I would give it to LO and see if he will take it.  They know what is should taste like a lot better than we do, or have DH smell it when he gets home.

DH smelled it. Agrees it doesn't smell like sour milk but that it still stinks. I am going to pitch it because even before other AFs it never smelled like this, and I can't think of anything I've eaten in the past week (it was pumped last week) that was different from the norm.

Thanks for all the help, ladies. I hate to chuck it, but I'd rather guarantee a happy baby.
