Dressing for the first day of school

How are you dressing your DC for the first day of school?  I know some kids get really dressed up.  We don't start school til next week and I was thinking of a comfy cotton dress or cute skirt/shirt, but I doubt I would go very dressy.  DD is very active and they have an outdoor playground, so I don't want to do anything that could get ruined (like crawling around on the playground).

  • I was wondering the same thing. DD likes skirts and dresses so I usually try to buy the cotton ones that aren't dressy. I think it's supposed to be cool and rainy on her first day so I'm still thinking of what would be best. I might just add some leggings to one of her favorite skirt outfits.

  • We got a little plaid pleated skirt at children's place but instead of a dressy shirt with it got a t-shirt and sweatshirt that match. Bonus that the skirt has built in shorts underneath for playing!

My girls both will only wear dresses and skirts, so we got a bunch of dresses and skirts and leggings for underneath for when the weather gets chilly. The plaid one is the dressiest we got her, but hardly dressy and not expensive so if it gets ruined at school I won't be upset, but it's still a cute little outfit and will make for adorable pictures of her first day.

  • For DD1's first day, I did want her to have a new outfit. :)

She likes skirts and dresses, so we found a cotton butterfly skirt and a coral t-shirt at our local Gap outlet. A step up from regular play clothes and very cute, but not overly dressy and with a pair of shorts underneath, didn't restrict what she could do on the playground.

  • I think you are being smart.  I know my son gets everything ruined at pre-k so we send him in his scrubbies so when the outfit dies we are not mourning.

  • I dressed DS very comfortably, but he was a little "dressed up" too in a new outfit that he got to help pick out.  He wore khaki shorts w/elastic waist to make sure he could get them down in time if he needed to go to the bathroom, and a really cute cotton button-down shirt. That was pretty on par with the rest of the kids in his class, and now that we're a couple of weeks into the year, he ranges from outfits like this to athletic-type shorts and t-shirts.

He also had brand new sneakers that he was excited to wear, which is a tradition from my childhood.  We always had brand new shoes that weren't worn at all until the first day of school.

  • Eva doesn't start school until the 20th so I haven't decided yet.  We are "encouraged" to not send girls in dresses because of all the climbing the kids do on both the indoor and outdoor play equipment.  I'm going to wait and see what the weather is going to be like before I buy anything but she'll definitely get a new outfit for the first day!

  • DD generally picks out her own clothes in the morning. She spent all summer going out in dresses, even though she was going to get wet and dirty playing in sprinklers & etc. I just didn't let her put on anything that I would be really upset about if it got ruined, like dresses my own grandmother made me or things like that. Otherwise, everything else is free game.

  • Well, there isn't a "real" first day of school for DD as she is in a combined preschool/daycare.  But I normally check the weather and dress appropriately.  I make sure if it is a skirt, she can move around easily and it's not something I would worry about being on the playground set.  Today she wore a skirt with a t-shirt, socks and sparkly tennis shoes.

  • My girls will only wear skirts and dresses.  And they insist on making their own clothing choices for the day.  (I can't imagine what this is going to be like in 10 years.)  They don't go to school super dressy though - even on the first day.
  • It depends on the weather mostly. It's been 80 degrees one day & 61 the next. She will most likely wear a shirt with skorts or a dress w/leggings. Nothing too dressy.

  • Nothing too dressy, but a comfy cotton knit dress with a matching hair bow.  It was cold and rainy!  Everything I bought for school is cute but sturdy.  Nothing that is hard to wash or fancy.  I love Gymboree for school appropriate cute stuff.
