Gym Policy

Does your gym allow your baby? Or do you know?

I had this bright idea that I would start walking on the tmill at the gym as soon as I can after delivery (I am due end of Oct and live in WI so it will be cold).

We are really good friends w/the gym owners, but I was just told my someone that they were told due to insurance policy, they couldn't have the baby there...but the gym owners little kids are always running around- and she said it was due to safety. I am thinking about asking them, as they are good friends maybe they would let me? hmmmm

My thought was that I would wear him and walk just as I would outside....they don't have any kind of daycare or anything. So not being able to bring him at all puts me in quite the predicament.

  • I guess it depends on how comfortable you feel with asking them, but they might feel like if they make exceptions for you they might need to make exceptions for others.

I'm guessing this gym doesn't have a daycare service?

  • You could ask, but prepared for them to say "no."  I'd guess you'd be more likely to be able to park him in a carseat or stroller near the treadmill as opposed to wearing him ON the treadmill. . . I think that would be a huge liability.

  • Our gym has a daycare. However I could see complaints from people especially if the baby gets fussy. I know I go to the gym for alone time and I don't necessarily want to hear a crying baby while I am there. Also, if they let you, wouldn't they have to allow others? And it could be against insurance policy because if you fell or were injured then baby would be at risk also and baby is not a "member"?

I would ask, but be prepared for a "no"...or maybe a "we can try it"

  • Yeah, I am going to ask. It is a small gym, so we will see. I think they have ok'd us to have a playpen put in the room they do classes in while we lift (my husband is a bodybuilder)--which is out of the way of the weights, but the tmills are upstairs. Maybe the carseat is a good idea...I can just go when baby is napping.

    damn winter.....

  • My gym didn't allow for DS to be there until he was walking 100%

Even when he was in the transition stage between crawling and walking, they still did not allow him in.

  • Thankfully the gym I go to (in WI no less, but in Hudson), the owners have four kids but they also have a daycare for kids old enough to sit up until age 9 (i.e. old enough to stay home for 2 hours unsupervised)..  I asked before I joined what their policy is in regard to baby-babies..  Their reply was as long as they're in the bucket, no problem being next to me while I train but that kids under 14 aren't allowed out on the floor.  Which kind of bums me out because I'd really like for DD to at some point be able to be out there starting to learn form and safety long before she's 14, but it is what it is.

  • I'm not sure I would wear the baby and walk but I know at my gym there are a couple moms who come in (not during peak hours as it would be a nuisance to most others working out) but during "off" hours and set a sleeping baby in the carrier next to their treadmill or elliptical while they work out...
