talk to me about childproofing....

I don't even know where to begin, and I sense crawling just around the corner. We are thinking of just blocking off our living room and nursery and making those the two "safe" zones. We have a small house, so that will be pretty easy to do and eliminate massive changes to the kitchens, bathrooms, etc. Any favorite baby gates? Baby-proofing essentials you love? TIA!

  • I'd love to hear responses too. Ty is so close to crawling but currently rolls everywhere and still manages to get into everything.

  • I am having trouble baby proofing. We need to so bad. Lilly isn't crawling but she can roll across the room with the best of them. The steps down to our foyer has a 52 inch opening with a wall on one side and an iron railing on the other. So for now I just sit on the step when I have her freely rolling around the living room.

I have the super yard xt (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2266978) which I have broken up into several "L shaped" pieces to block the steps to the upper level of the home (unfortunately, I can't use this on the steps I described in the first paragraph because she can push it down the steps). I will also use the superyard pieces to block the back of our entertainment system where I have caught LO rolling to to get into the wires) I have also started with the outlet covers, especially where I let her roll around. I caught her reaching for the outlet and that was that.

Once she starts crawling I will use the table edge guard (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3909955) for our tables, and cabinet and toilet locks. For the most part, I hope to keep her in the living room. But the more she gets mobile and I catch her getting close to things the more childproofing I will do.

I am just really nervous of my foyer steps that I have a feeling I will have trouble finding a gate for.

  • I'm not a good person to ask, all we have done so far is put outlet covers on every single exposed outlet, and a gate for our laundry room - we have indoor cats and their food/water and litter box is in there. I just got some new cabinet locks today that I plan on putting in our kitchen. The way our house is, everything is connected - living room, breakfast area and kitchen, so I am going to have to put locks on our cabinets, there is NO way to gate it off. We're going to get two more gates at least for the stairs and for the entrance from our kitchen to our dining room and formal living room. Part of our babyproofing consisted of getting an entertainment center for our TV and stuff (no exposed wires), and we got a coffee table that is a "cocktail ottoman" so no hard edges where he could hit his head. I'm really not sure what else to do. I think we will figure it out as we go, in all honesty.

  • We are only able to make 1 'safe zone' and we got the https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000G1YW98. Due to the way our house is set up we could only figure out that this would work since we live on a tri-level townhouse and our house is long and narrow like a bowling lane. Tonight was the first night that we put our daughter in it and its working so far! Its pretty sturdy when she pulls herself up. We still have floor space around it to walk around. I just can't have gates right now as I get a bigger belly I have a higher chance of tripping on it.
